Amitabh Bachchan Calls Shah Rukh Khan’s Swades Performance “Absolutely Outstanding”

Amitabh Bachchan has sung praises on Shah Rukh Khan’s performance in Swades, describing the actor’s work in the 2004 film as “absolutely outstanding.” The veteran actor said so in the recent season of Kaun Banega Crorepati 18 when he discussed some of Shah Rukh’s most memorable roles.

In the episode, a contestant was asked to identify the actor who had portrayed a NASA scientist, an Indian Air Force pilot and a hockey coach in three different films. After the contestant correctly identified Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan used the moment to speak about his admiration for the superstar’s performances.

Big B mainly mentioned Swades, in which Shah Rukh played Mohan Bhargava, a NASA scientist who returns to India and becomes deeply connected with the challenges faced by a rural community. Amitabh said Shah Rukh’s acting in the film was very good, and he tells the actor the same whenever they meet.

Swades was made in 2004 by Ashutosh Gowariker and featured Shah Rukh Khan alongside Gayatri Joshi and Kishori Ballal. Although it was not a major commercial success during its initial theatrical run, the film went on to be a cult classic and is widely regarded as one of Shah Rukh Khan's most popular performances.

Shah Rukh’s performance as Mohan Bhargava was also recognised at the 50th Filmfare Awards, where he won Best Actor for Swades. The film also received A.R. Rahman’s Best Background Score.

Amitabh’s appreciation is very much appreciated given his own stature in Hindi cinema, and his history with Shah Rukh Khan as well. So many movies have been made with the two actors including Mohabbatein, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Veer-Zaara.

The comments have since brought joy to Shah Rukh's fans and many revisit scenes from Swades and praised the understated performance that made Mohan Bhargava such a memorable character.

The moment on KBC 18 was in fact a celebration of two generations of Bollywood legends— Amitabh Bachchan appreciating Shah Rukh Khan’s craft and acknowledging a performance that continues to resonate with audiences more than two decades after the film’s release.
