Lucille Désirée Ball was born on August 6, 1911, in Jamestown, New York, and had her family hardships early in life. Ball's father Henry Durrell Ball died young when she was three years old and her mother Désirée Evelyn Hunt Ball had to help raise the family with the support of Lucille's grandparents. Ball had always liked to perform and at an early age she always wanted to be an actress.
Lucille attended the John Murray Anderson School for the Dramatic Arts in New York City, in order to pursue her dreams. As many aspiring actors in show business, her early years were far from easy. She worked as a fashion model first before moving to Hollywood, where she played a number of small roles in the 1930s and early 1940s as a film actress. Although success didn’t come overnight, her persistence, charisma and willingness to embrace comedy opened up new doors.
Lucille Ball’s career soared in 1951 after the premiere of I Love Lucy in which she starred with her husband Desi Arnaz. DeMille Award and was inducted into the TV Hall of Fame. In honor of her lasting impact on American culture, she was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Lucille Ball married Desi Arnaz in 1940 and they had two children, Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1960 but they remained connected through their family and their shared television history. In 1961, Ball married comedian Gary Morton, and he remained her husband for the rest of her life.
