Telugu playback singer Rahul Sipligunj has been named in a police case along with 11 others in Visakhapatnam after a complaint filed by a woman and has not been found guilty or sent to court on a new charge of cyber harassment.
According to the woman’s complaint, the dispute is on the part of Karpurapu Rahul Reddy, who is identified in reports as Rahul Sipligunj’s brother-in-law. Rahul Reddy had promised to marry her and then cheated her, she said.
She also asserts that he threatened to make her personal photographs and videos public.
The complaint also names Rahul Sipligunj and other people. The woman alleged that the singer threatened her and pressured her to give video statements. Police registered a case against Sipligunj and 11 others at MVP police station in Visakhapatnam based on the complaint.
The allegations have not been established in court, and registration of an FIR does not by itself establish guilt. Police are expected to investigate the claims, statements and other evidence as part of the investigation.
The development has been made public because of Sipligunj's profile in the Telugu entertainment industry. A playback singer and independent musician, he became popular with Telugu cinema. He was also the winner of the third season of Bigg Boss Telugu.
The latest case is separate from the older incident of the singer that resurfaced online earlier this year. In that case Sipligunj had been involved in a 2020 pub-related assault case in Hyderabad.
The singer had said he was assaulted during an argument at the venue.
For the current Visakhapatnam case, the focus is now on the allegations made in the woman’s complaint and the police investigation that follows. Further developments could depend on statements from the people named in the complaint, examination of digital evidence and the findings of investigators.
As the investigation takes place, any claims made by either side will need to be analyzed in the legal framework.
So until then, the allegations of Rahul Sipligunj and the others in the case should be treated as allegations instead of facts.
