Ram Gopal Varma has announced his next crime drama Police Company, a T-Series production inspired by one of the most intense chapters in Mumbai's underworld and police history. Harshvardhan Rane will play the celebrated encounter specialist Daya Nayak as another real-life figure in Varma’s long history with crime-based storytelling.

In the context of the Dawood Ibrahim–Chhota Rajan rivalry, Police Company follows a police squad that operated in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The squad was involved in operations that resulted in hundreds of gangsters being killed or arrested from 1997 to 2004, it said.

The film’s tagline, “More Dangerous Than D Company,” sets the tone immediately for the project. Varma looks more interested than just dealing with the Mumbai underworld, the interweaving of organised crime, police power and the systems that were set up to fight criminal networks.

One interesting part of the project is that the extraordinary powers law-enforcement personnel have can create unintended consequences. The announcement suggests that a force created to confront gangsters could become influenced by money, power and competing interests.

Harshvardhan Rane’s casting as Daya Nayak has also raised further questions. The actor will be playing a character from Mumbai’s controversial and heavily publicised encounter policing era. So his performance will be closely watched, as the role is a very violent one as a real-life police officer.

For Ram Gopal Varma, Police Company is a return to territory which has been central to his filmmaking career. The director has tackled Mumbai’s underworld and police-crime nexus in many films (most famously in Satya and Company). His ability to get into gritty environments and complex characters in the crime dramas has made his crime dramas a major influence on Indian cinema.

Police Company is expected to begin production in mid-August 2026. Details of the supporting cast, shooting locations and release plans will be revealed as the movie gets into production.

The announcement has already elicited discussion among movie fans. Many are happy with Varma returning to his gritty crime-film roots but at the same time hope Police Company will bring a new psychological dimension to things rather than just gangster versus police stories.

Police Company is an interesting addition to the filmmaker’s crime-film universe with a real-life police figure at its centre, a dramatic historical context and Varma’s particular style of filmmaking.
