S. Rajamouli has given an important update on his eagerly awaited world-trotting adventure film Varanasi about 80% of the shooting so far. In an interview with ET now, the film's director said that the production has been completed for most of the film’s biggest and most ambitious action scenes and that all the other parts are still being shot.
Varanasi is one of the most eagerly awaited Indian movies in production with Mahesh Babu as the lead actor. Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Prithviraj Sukumaran are also playing some of the main roles, bringing together an impressive cast of actors for what is likely to be a great big movie.
Rajamouli told us viewers will be taken on a journey around the world with the story. Starting from the spiritual city of Varanasi, the story will then take us on a journey to Antarctica, Africa, and ancient Rome, blending adventure, history, mystery, and action into one movie. The film’s ambitious storyline is already generating a lot of excitement for movie lovers across the world.
One of the most striking and important elements of the project is its technical achievement. Rajamouli said that the entire film is shot entirely in IMAX cinemas and is the first non-English feature film to be shot completely in the IMAX format. The director’s decision is indicative of his commitment to making the world’s largest visual experience in a bigger way for viewers.
Rajamouli also said that production and visual effects (VFX) work are being performed simultaneously without waiting until filming has been completed. The parallel work process will help the creative team to review complex CGI sequences early, increase efficiency, and ensure that the film's visual quality is in line with international standards.
Rajamouli has consistently pushed the boundaries of Indian cinema by making such visually stunning blockbusters as Baahubali and RRR. Varanasi is expected to be a show of great magnitude, and the audience can’t wait to see Mahesh Babu working with the celebrated filmmaker for the first time.
Rajamouli also reflected on his previous work and shared that Eega is his favorite among all the movies he has made. Baahubali and the Oscar-winning RRR were so successful, but the director spoke of a special emotional connection to the 2012 fantasy film.
We are targeting a worldwide theatrical release on April 7, 2027; this will give us a full period to get post-production and visual effects done for the big project. Industry experts believe Varanasi is one of the biggest Indian film releases of 2027: it is international in scale, tech-savvy, and has a huge cast.
With 80% of the filming already completed, Rajamouli’s latest update has only increased fans’ anticipation for the film. As production moves toward its final stages, the world is eagerly awaiting even more of what could be another milestone of Indian cinema.
