Aamir Khan Denies 3 Idiots Character Was Inspired by Sonam Wangchuk
Aamir Khan has put an end to one of Bollywood’s longest-standing assumptions by clarifying that his iconic 3 Idiots character Phunsukh Wangdu was not inspired by Ladakhi engineer and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk. The actor spoke to the BFI audience in London on July 16 and dismissed the long-running speculation around the 2009 movie.
In response to a question from the audience, Aamir Khan said that neither he nor the film’s writers knew about Sonam Wangchuk while making 3 Idiots. According to him, the similarities in the years that people noticed were all coincidental and not from any real-life person.
Khan said that the creative team behind the film did not model Phunsukh Wangdu on Wangchuk’s life, personality, or achievements. The character was developed independently as part of the film’s fictional narrative, which was adapted from Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone.
Even rejecting the claims of inspiration, Aamir Khan was very proud of Sonam Wangchuk and his contributions to education and sustainable innovation. He praised Wangchuk for his pioneering work in Ladakh - his work on the Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL) which transformed learning for students in the region.
The movie also noted Wangchuk’s innovations in the field and artificial glaciers (known as ice stupas) that help people store water during the harsh Himalayan winters and Khan described those accomplishments as inspiring and worthy of recognition, no matter what they have to do with the movie.
The clarification comes at a time when Sonam Wangchuk is once again in the headlines in his ongoing protest for constitutional protections for Ladakh. Since beginning his hunger strike on June 29, Wangchuk has reportedly lost more than 8 kilograms and supporters and civil society groups have expressed concern about his health as well.
His movement seeks greater constitutional protection for Ladakh; demands for statehood, inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, and stronger safeguards for the region’s environment, land, and tribal communities. The protest has attracted national attention and shifted the public debate from the long-running debate over 3 Idiots to the larger issues affecting Ladakh.
For many years, many people thought that Phunsukh Wangdu was inspired by Sonam Wangchuk, because of the mutual educational philosophy and innovative approach to solving local problems. But Aamir Khan’s recent statement completely negates that belief and asserts that his admiration for Wangchuk’s work does not change.
With that insight, the actor hopes to separate cinematic fiction from reality and to make sure Sonam Wangchuk is recognized for what he does in education, sustainability, and social change, not for some superficial relationship to a popular Bollywood character.
