Article 370 Wins Best Feature Film at the 72nd National Film Awards; Yami Gautam Bags Best Actress Honour
The 72nd National Film Awards were awarded on 18 July 2026 for films released in 2024, and recognize the best in Indian cinema in terms of performance and direction, and storytelling in various languages. Article 370 won the Best Feature Film award as the most politically charged drama which is so much more for audiences who like the drama as well as the powerful performance.
Yami Gautam was recognized for her excellent performance in Article 370 as Best Actress (critic and audience). Her portrayal of a hard-working intelligence officer had the most emotional depth and conviction. And the National Award cemented Yami as one of the most versatile actors in the industry.
Kartik Aaryan and Mammootty shared the Best Actor award for their best performances. Kartik gave one of his top performances in a film and Mammootty received his fourth National Award for his role in the highly acclaimed Malayalam film Bramayugam. The shared acclaim of both actors and actresses and the recognition of the diversity of talent in Indian cinema in the mainstream and regional cinema.
The Best Director prize went to Rajkumar Periasamy for Tamil film Amaran, as a moving tribute that impressed the jury with its emotional storytelling and technical talent, and direction. And the recognition added to Tamil cinema’s growing presence on the national stage.
South Indian cinema dominated this year’s awards. Big-budget films like Kalki 2898 AD and Pushpa 2 won awards in all technical and creative categories, and these are examples of that industry’s ability to make visually ambitious and commercially successful films. In fact, their success illustrated the increasing pan-India resonance of regional cinema and its contribution to the development of Indian cinema.
But the film industry was flooded with congratulatory messages from across the film industry after that announcement. The success of the winners (who were Allu Arjun and Chiranjeevi as well as other actors and actresses) and the variety of stories that National Awards recognised were celebrated by the winners. This year, it was said that the National Awards honored movies that were about courage, culture, patriotism and social issues and the diversity of India’s multilingual cinema and made them a great selection and appreciated the diversity of films that we can still work with.
The 72nd National Film Awards once again highlighted the importance of meaningful storytelling and new and innovative storytelling in cinema. From socially relevant dramas and historical stories to big action movies, the winners were representative of the diversity of Indian cinema and the growing recognition of talent from every part of the country.
As Article 370 became the night’s biggest award winner and artists from various film industries took top honours, the awards underlined how strong, creative and culturally diverse Indian cinema is now on both national and global platforms.
