Bhupen Hazarika’s Centenary: PM Modi Recalls Musical Legacy, Says His Songs United People
Legendary singer, composer and filmmaker Dr Bhupen Hazarika is being remembered across India on his 100th birth anniversary. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the cultural icon and said that he had made “extraordinary contribution to music, art and society.” His work remains connected with Assam and the rest of the Northeast but Hazarika was celebrated for creating music which crossed geographical and cultural boundaries.
PM Modi remembered the legendary artist on September 8 and reflected on how his work had a long lasting impact. The Prime Minister said Hazarika’s voice was soul of Assam, he introduced cultural richness and spirit of Northeast to audience across country.
In his tribute Modi said Hazarika’s contribution was not limited to entertainment alone. Songs and compositions by the musician spoke for millions of people- emotions, aspirations and thoughts; humanity, social harmony, compassion and cultural identity, through music he explored themes like these so that listeners from different backgrounds could connect with him.
The Prime Minister also talked about Hazarika’s ability to bring people together through music. His songs had messages which transcended linguistic and cultural barriers, they helped audiences understand what communities from the Northeast were going through and what they aspired to, so that was not just an artist but a bridge between parts of India too.
PM Modi also recalled fondly how he had been associated with the beginning of Hazarika’s birth centenary celebrations in Guwahati last year. Remembering the occasion, the Prime Minister said he very warmly remembered attending the start of the celebrations and paid tribute to the musician for his long-lasting influence.
Hazarika’s career was extremely varied. He sang but he was also composer, lyricist, filmmaker and cultural figure as well. His music drew on traditions and realities of Assam but addressed universal themes that found an audience outside the region too. His voice and storytelling style eventually made him one of the most influential figures in Indian music.
For Assam Hazarika’s contribution is particularly special. His songs captured landscapes, people, traditions and social realities of the state; they gave a wider audience an opportunity to know Assamese culture while at the same time his creative work showed that regional stories could have universal emotional appeal.
His influence was not limited to Assamese language music either. Hazarika worked in different Indian languages and contributed to cinema too — his musical sensibility was brought out much wider audience. He could put powerful ideas into relatively simple but deeply moving compositions which is why his legacy endures decades after many of his most famous works were composed.
