Bigg Boss 20: Priyanka Chopra Sends Mary Kom Luck, Leaves Fellow Contestants With A ‘Knockout’ Warning
Mary Kom has officially entered the Bigg Boss 20 house and one of Indian sport’s most famous names has made her way into Salman Khan’s reality show. The World Champion Boxer and Olympic medallist came to work on Sunday, September 6 and has joined this season’s batch.
While Mary Kom is used to fighting opponents in the boxing ring, her next challenge will be very different. She will spend 105 days in the Bigg Boss house, where contestants must work, nominations come through and alliances are torn apart and it's hard for them to live together under constant cameras. But before she went into this strange setting someone who knows her very well sent a message that was emotional and fun.
Actor Priyanka Chopra, who played Mary Kom in the biographical sports drama Mary Kom in 2014, filmed a video message for her during the Bigg Boss 20 premiere. In the message Priyanka wished the champion boxer luck for her new journey and advised her to remain true to herself in the competition.
Priyanka also asked Mary to play the game with an open heart and was excited about watching her journey. Her message was more than a warm wish though. The actor seemed to also play it up for Mary’s fellow contestants by declaring the boxer’s formidable knockout power.
“Inka Knockout na bohot bhaari parta hai. Mary ap bas jaisi hai waisi rahie. Khule dil se kheliye. I’m so looking forward to your journey. Bohot Bohot sara pyaar,” Priyanka said in her video message.
The mention of Mary’s knockouts was a fitting bit of humor because the boxer’s sporting success is so closely connected to her ability to dominate opponents in the ring. If that competitive spirit extends to the Bigg Boss house, which is a bit of the fun she has done so far this season with her participation.
Mary and Priyanka have been in an extremely special professional relationship since the making of Mary Kom. In 2014, Priyanka portrayed the great boxer in the film (Omung Kumar had produced and Sanjay Leela Bhansali was the director). The film explored Mary's life story from her childhood to becoming one of India's greatest boxers.
The movie also earned national recognition and won the Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment award at the 62nd National Film Awards. Priyanka’s performance as the boxer brought Mary’s story to a larger mainstream audience and was one of her best performances.
Now that the movie has coalesced their stories on screen in years, Priyanka’s message has added another personal dimension to Mary’s TV debut. Her encouragement could prove meaningful when Mary is in a completely different competitive environment.
The Bigg Boss format is well-suited for contestants to engage in interpersonal problems, emotional situations, house duties, nominations, and weekly exercises that are on task. A physical task can be tough for an athlete who has spent much of her career training for competitive sports, and reality television is a very unique situation.
Bigg Boss 20 aired on September 6 with Salman Khan hosting it again. The season has a lot of entertainment, social media and other personalities in the line-up with Mary Kom in the mix and audience of the contestants. The show will air on JioHotstar at 9 pm and Colors at 10:30 pm.
The season's reported contestants include Aasif Khan, Kanika Mann, ScoutOp (Tanmay Singh), Amrapali Dubey, Mahhi Vij, Yung DSA, Qazi Touqeer, Arishfa Khan, Rohed Khan, Isha Rikhi and Gullu (Kushal Tanwar), among others.
Now that Mary Kom is officially in the house, she’ll be looking to see if the determination and discipline that she has learned from the boxing arena will be able to handle reality television. And with Priyanka Chopra’s playful “knockout” warning already making an impression, Mary’s housemates may want to keep their guard up.
For now, the champion boxer has traded the boxing ring for the Bigg Boss house. Whether she will be one of the strongest personalities of the season will become clearer as she gets off the ground.
