As Nitesh Tiwari’s epic Ramayana: Part 1 gets closer, veteran actress Deepika Chikhalia, who immortalized the role of Goddess Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s iconic television series Ramayan, has expressed her thoughts on Sai Pallavi taking on the role.
Deepika praised Sai Pallavi's acting ability in an interview with Variety India but also gave her views about how Sita has been portrayed.
Asked about Sai Pallavi, Deepika said she calls the actress a “phenomenal actor” and thinks she is very talented. But she also observed that the traditional descriptions of Goddess Sita do not mention curly hair, saying:
"Sitaji with curly hair is not mentioned."
Her comment has stirred up a debate among fans, and some see it as a comment about traditional iconography, not criticism of Sai Pallavi’s performance.
Praise for Sai Pallavi
Deepika, despite having seen this, felt she knows Sai Pallavi and is proud of her performance. Sai Pallavi is well known for her natural acting style in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam films, so her casting as Sita is one of the big-ticket attractions of the film.

Deepika also referred to the enduring popularity of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan, which first aired in the late 1980s and remains one of India's most beloved television serials.
She said the original adaptation was still very much in someone’s heart and many people still think of its cast and the divine characters they portrayed.
The actress also said that depicting Sita changed her career and public image, and made her a household name across India.
Arun Govil returns to the Ramayana Universe
Deepika also expressed happiness over Arun Govil, who famously played Lord Ram in the original TV series, returning to the Ramayana story in Nitesh Tiwari’s adaptation.
In the new movie, Arun Govil will play King Dashrath, father of Lord Ram, which is nostalgic for the classic TV adaptation and the new movie.
