Harrdy Sandhu Birthday: From Cricketer to Punjabi Music Star and Bollywood Actor
Harrdy Sandhu’s birthday is celebrated on September 6, one of Punjabi entertainment’s own, Harrdy Sandhu. Born Hardavinder Singh Sandhu in Patiala, Punjab, Harrdy has succeeded as a singer and actor after a sudden career as a cricketer.
Harrdy Sandhu is now famous for chart-topping Punjabi songs, stylish music videos, and Hindi films, and the way he took up a career in entertainment has shown us that an entertaining performer can reinvent himself when one of his early sporting careers gets cut short by injury.
From Cricket to Music
Before becoming an overnight celebrity in Punjabi music, Harrdy Sandhu played cricket for more than a decade. He was a right-arm fast-medium bowler and represented Punjab at the domestic level. He also had plans to develop into a better player, but an elbow injury meant he had to stop playing and came to see professional cricket in 2007.
Sandhu’s setback may have ended his career in the public spotlight, but Sandhu continued to pursue his second passion — music. He did vocal training for around 18 months and began establishing himself as a singer.
His first album, This Is Harsh Sandhu, was a start in his musical journey. His first song, Tequilla Shot, introduced him to the world, but it was his later work and releases that would change his life.
Soch and Joker changed his career
Harsh Sandhu’s big breakthrough came with Soch and Joker, both songs by the celebrated lyricist Jaani and composed by B Praak. The tracks became huge and established Sandhu as one of the leading voices of modern Punjabi pop music.
The success of Soch soon spread beyond the Punjabi music industry. The song was recreated for the Bollywood film Airlift, giving Sandhu’s work a much wider Hindi-speaking audience.
He also followed it with a series of popular songs like Backbone, Horn Blow, Yaar Ni Milya, Naah, Kya Baat Ay, Dance Like, Jee Karda and Titliaan Warga. His production partnership with Jaani and B Praak was one of the most important creative partnerships of his music career.
His song Naah, with Nora Fatehi, became another big hit and was later adapted into Naah Goriye for the Bollywood film Bala.
Harsh Sandhu’s Acting Journey
Music then opened another door for Harrdy -- acting. He made his acting debut in 2014 in the Punjabi film Yaaran Da Katchup. Moving to cinema allowed him to go beyond music videos and become an actor.
His biggest Hindi-film breakthrough came with Kabir Khan's sports drama 83 in 2021. The movie re-enacted India's historic 1983 Cricket World Cup win, and Sandhu played former Indian fast bowler Madan Lal with the unusual opportunity to portray a legendary cricketer from the sport he once pursued himself.
He later appeared in the action thriller Code Name: Tiranga which further solidified his presence in Hindi cinema.
A Birthday Celebration of Reinvention.
Harsh Sandhu’s story is different because he didn’t follow one path. He started as a cricketer, suffered a career-ending injury, and then rebuilt himself as a singer before becoming an actor.
His music remains popular with Punjabi and Hindi audiences, and his cinematic performances have brought him to viewers outside of the music world. From Soch and Joker to Naah, Kya Baat Ay and Bijlee Bijlee, so many of his songs are a part of Punjabi pop culture.
Harsh Sandhu's birthday should allow us to see that he’s a person who has made his career look good, and if anybody thinks his story is one of the most interesting crossover stories of Indian entertainment in the history of our country, it’s not about the great cricket players; they’re not.
