Hema Malini Gets Emotional Remembering Dharmendra: ‘He Never Stopped Me From Following My Dreams’
Hema Malini, a veteran actress and BJP MP, could not help but cry when she recalled her late husband Dharmendra, the figure she said was her greatest source of strength and unconditional support.
Hema Malini said Dharmendra came to her life as much more than a life partner; he was the pillar who kept her going through the ups and downs of her life. She admitted talking about him still brings on tears but she thanks him for the years they've been through together. His support and confidence in her skill also guided her in both her career and in herself.
Hema said one of her most touching memories was Dharmendra never suggested she step away from her career after marriage, even when she was in a very difficult time and in a film studio and when many actresses were leaving. He urged her to continue acting and to pursue classical dance.
Hema also explained that Dharmendra’s absence has been particularly difficult for her daughters, Esha Deol and Ahana Deol. The family still misses him every day, and getting used to life without him has been a difficult time for them, she said. But the people who are in grief are buoyed up by the values and memories of him that he left behind.
Hema reflected on Dharmendra’s last advice that he always stressed family togetherness. His message was simple yet powerful— stay united, spend time with one another and never let distance destroy family bonds. Those words are the guiding principles for the family today, who are still in sync.
Hema dismissed speculation that does occasionally surface about the Deol family and explained that there is no division between the families. She praised Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol for being supportive and loving and said they have remained united despite bad times.
Dharmendra, who died in November 2025 after a long illness, left behind a cinematic legacy of more than six decades and more than 300 films. His contribution to Indian cinema has inspired generations of actors and filmmakers and his warmth and humility remain cherished by colleagues and fans alike.
But Dharmendra’s legacy extends beyond the silver screen for Hema Malini. It is about the love, encouragement, and family values he instilled in those closest to him.
