3 Idiots 2 Update: Rajkumar Hirani Reveals When Aamir Khan, Madhavan & Sharman Joshi Could Return
Nearly two decades into a century of Indian cinema, now that 3 Idiots has become one of the most popular movies of all time and a major film to watch, the audience can finally expect to see Rancho, Farhan and Raju back from their roots to come back. Director Rajkumar Hirani has said that work is currently progressing on a possible sequel to the 2009 blockbuster movie. But the filmmaker has made clear that the project is only going to move forward if the writing is so good that it can justify a follow-up to such a film that is well written.
Hirani and his writing team are working on the idea, he told recently, but he was cautious about sharing too much information and the project is still in its embryonic stage. The director said more details would be revealed once the film reaches the appropriate stage of development.
Hirani also suggested that the original principal cast could return for the sequel. While a full official casting announcement is yet to be made, his comments about keeping the casting the same have naturally excited fans of Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi. Aamir played Ranchoddas Chanchad, popularly known as Rancho, while Madhavan portrayed Farhan Qureshi and Sharman Joshi played Raju Rastogi.
3 Idiots sequel is being developed around a story
Hirani claims that the sequel was one where the idea didn’t come to him in a straightforward way, and that the sequel was not born by a simple decision of just going back into the franchise. Hirani explains that he and his writer Abhijat Joshi had already started another story and got the idea in mind and wrote it when he and Abhijat Joshi had been designing another story. As they worked on the material, they decided on the idea that the story would really fit the characters from 3 Idiots so nicely with the 3 Idiots.
Hirani said that the focus was not on making a sequel but on finding the right story for these characters. Rancho, Farhan and Raju became to the filmmakers, about 20 years after the events in the original movie, what would have happened if they tried to intervene.
That approach may allow the second movie to move beyond the nostalgia of the first one to go beyond just getting nostalgic for the old times. The characters are getting older, and new ones will be, too, and a new story could explore the life of the former characters, how they live in the fields, work relationships and what they’ve ever done and how have they done in their life, how they’ve changed over the years. The storyline could also help to see education, ambition, friendship and the chase after one’s passion from a different perspective, and see them as people of maturity.
Hirani does not want to rush 3 Idiots 2
Though the demand for another 3 Idiots film is immense, Hirani seems reluctant to push the project forward just because the original is so popular. The filmmaker has said over and over again that the script must be compelling to justify the sequel.
His concern is understandable because of the cultural significance of 3 Idiots. The movie was not only a box office hit but also received high ratings not only for the movies but also because the portrayal of India’s education system and the pressures on students is so powerful in the film and the students’ hardships in the end made it an interesting movie. Dialogues, characters and songs from the film are still very popular years after it has been released (and still have a presence and resonance).
Hirani, therefore, can’t just rely on the popularity of the original cast or characters for a sequel. If writing doesn’t match the emotional and entertainment value of the first film, he believes there would be little reason to make another instalment.
The Lage Raho Munna Bhai connection
Hirani’s approach to 3 Idiots 2 is similar to how Lage Raho Munna Bhai came into existence. The filmmaker explained that he was not originally planning to make a conventional sequel to Munna Bhai MBBS. Instead, he had been developing a separate story involving Mahatma Gandhi and the idea of non-violence.
Hirani and his team felt that the idea would mesh well with Munna and Circuit's characters during the writing process. This led to Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which brought Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi back as the iconic duo.
The director seems to be following a similar philosophy with 3 Idiots. He doesn’t want to make an old franchise a new fiction; he wants the characters and narrative to come together naturally. If the current idea becomes a good screenplay, the original trio might appear on the big screen again.
What about Munna Bhai 3?
While 3 Idiots 2 is already generating buzz, Hirani also discussed another highly anticipated project: Munna Bhai 3. The filmmaker said that he is still writing the third instalment of the popular franchise.
Hirani has already spoken about the difficulty of finding the right story for Munna Bhai 3. The success of Munna Bhai MBBS and Lage Raho Munna Bhai has generated expectations very high, and the director does not wish to make another film unless he believes it can do justice to the characters and the franchise.
As of now, both 3 Idiots 2 and Munna Bhai 3 remain projects in development but have not yet been officially announced as release dates. Hirani’s comments are very significant as they indicate that the filmmaker is working on stories for both franchises.
If the 3 Idiots sequel does happen eventually, the biggest thing will be Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi reunited again. For fans who have spent years wondering what happened to Rancho, Farhan and Raju after their college days, Hirani’s idea of exploring their lives two decades later could offer a fascinating continuation of one of Bollywood’s most memorable stories.
