Kabir Khan Hails Kartik Aaryan's National Award Win: 'Chandu Champion Is a Performance for the Ages'
Kabir Khan was really proud of Kartik Aaryan’s National Award-winning performance in Chandu Champion, calling it “a performance for the ages” of Kartik in the film. The filmmaker said it was a lot of work that he had done and he was disappointed Kartik didn’t get the honor.
Kabir Khan said Kartik was truly dedicated and gave the actor one of the best performances he has ever shown. The role demanded full physical and emotional immersion and Kartik exceeded every expectation, he said.
"I would have been very disappointed if it hadn’t come to him because I genuinely believe—and I don’t say this because it’s my film—that it’s a performance for the ages," Kabir said when discussing the actor’s achievement.
The director also highlighted a common problem faced by successful actors. He said, “Mainstream stars” are more often judged as much for their popularity than their performances and that can sometimes drown out the quality of their performances.
What happens sometimes is that with mainstream actors, their stardom overshadows their acting ability. They're often slotted into a certain category," Kabir said, adding that Kartik’s performance in Chandu Champion proved he’s capable of playing deeply layered and emotional roles.
Kabir said Kartik’s National Award is a victory for the actor and filmmakers and the whole team. “The recognition was a great thing for everybody who worked so hard to bring that sort of story to the big screen.
I’m really happy for Kartik. I’m really proud of what he’s done for Chandu Champion. And yes, of course, I take it as a win for all of us. It's a film that all of us worked really hard on,” said the filmmaker.
Kabir says the most telling thing about Kartik's preparation is that the actor has completely transformed. Kartik was in a deep mental and physical battle to be able to play the character as him, the filmmaker said. The rigorous training and discipline he went through in order to be able to play the character was what gave him the confidence to perform in a movie that was so resonant both for audiences and critics.
Kabir said that it is always nice when we see such hard work being rewarded. “Kartik was completely transformed physically and mentally. I’m pleased that the work he put in has paid off because it’s always great when an actor puts in that kind of effort,” he said.
Chandu Champion has been widely praised for its inspiring narrative and strong performances, Kartik Aaryan’s portrayal being one of the film’s major strengths. His National Award victory further solidifies his position as one of the most versatile actors of his generation.
