Kareena Kapoor Questions Bollywood’s Violence Trend After Animal Success: ‘Herd Mentality’ Debate Returns
Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal still remains a topic of discussion in Bollywood even after it has achieved huge success. Ranbir Kapoor’s film received a lot of negative reaction to it: violent storytelling, darker stories and relationships; director Sandeep Reddy Vanga faced a lot of ire from the Hindi film industry.
Now, the debate has resurfaced after actress Kareena Kapoor Khan spoke out about the current trend of filmmakers following the formula that seems to work at the box office. Kareena is related to Ranbir Kapoor who played the lead role in Animal. However, her comments were about the larger industry trend and not about the actor.
Kareena Kapoor Calls Out ‘Herd Mentality’
Kareena pointed out what she referred to as a form of “herd mentality” in the film industry by talking about Bollywood’s changing storytelling patterns.
She said, “Abhi violence chal rahi hai… Animal chal gayi toh chalo sab violence kar lete hai,” suggesting that once a film made around a theme becomes successful, other filmmakers may immediately try to reproduce the same formula.
Her comments have once again brought Animal into the centre of a discussion about Bollywood’s creative choices.
According to Kareena’s argument, the success of one film shouldn’t automatically convince the movie industry that audiences want a whole series of similar movies every time there are more and more movies to come. What filmmakers need to do is to be aware of changing audience preferences and make their stories and not get to tell something new about which to do and tell the audience something different.
Animal remains a major Bollywood talking point
There is no doubt that Animal was one of the most commercially significant Hindi films of its time. Ranbir Kapoor became the center of a huge debate and Sandeep Reddy Vanga was given great attention in the Indian film industry.
At the same time, the movie was controversial as graphic violence, aggressive characters, and provocative themes were present in it.
Vanga has previously spoken about being criticised in Bollywood and has maintained that he and his film were targeted, even as Ranbir received so much praise for his performance.
Animal is different for different audiences. For some, it is a movie that is bold and has a different directorial voice. For others, the violent treatment of characters and relationships raises questions about the direction of mainstream Hindi cinema.
Did Bollywood copy the formula?
Kareena’s comments have also triggered a broader question: Did Bollywood actually benefit from copying the formula associated with Animal?
After the success of the movie, darker characters, violent stories and aggressive storytelling became far more visible in mainstream Hindi cinema. Several filmmakers and actors appeared to be willing to look at stories with morally grey protagonists and dangerous action.
But critics of this trend contend that just reproducing surface-level qualities of a successful movie is not going to provide similar box office numbers.
This distinction is important. Animal was not successful only because it had violence. Its effect also came from Vanga’s own filmmaking style, Ranbir Kapoor’s performance, the film’s scale, music, characters, and the film’s polarising narrative.
Success Can’t Be Reduced to Violence
Animal’s debate also raises a larger question about how Bollywood perceives box office success.
A successful film can influence an industry, but finding out the reasons why people loved it is much harder. Storytelling, performances, direction, music, marketing, release time and audience curiosity can all contribute to a film’s performance.
Thus, reducing Animal to a “violence formula” may overlook a number of other factors that contributed to its cultural impact.
Vanga’s style of filmmaking supporters say he created his own strong characters and a distinct visual language and made Animal a very different kind of action drama, not so much a traditional action drama. It became popular and it kept up the conversation because of the controversial themes.
The Bigger question for Bollywood
Kareena Kapoor’s comments ultimately point to a larger issue: whether Bollywood should follow trends or take greater creative risks.
As I am going to watch movies from far and wide India and around the world at the theater or online, I can't think of anything that hasn't been on there. So people are now seeing and getting to know several styles of storytelling and genres.
And for filmmakers, the fact that the blockbuster’s ingredients are clearly visible means that it is not enough to copy the ingredients and go on with this thing.
So the continuing Animal debate is not just about Sandeep Reddy Vanga or Kareena Kapoor. It raises questions about originality, audience expectations and the industry’s instinct to go after the top formula.
Animal is going to be criticized and its huge commercial impact is not going to be ignored. The lesson for Bollywood, then, is that success doesn’t always come from a formula or genre. What really hits home to an audience would be good storytelling, a good director and great acting to create a movie that lasts.
