Kareena Kapoor is expanding her cinematic horizon in the movies she is working on and her upcoming projects all show that she is going beyond Bollywood.
The actress is currently in the limelight for her work with Malayalam superstar Prithviraj Sukumaran in Daayra and industry sources say she could also share the screen with Tamil star Dhanush in another big movie to come.
Kareena's collaboration with Prithviraj has already generated considerable curiosity among moviegoers. Daayra is produced by Meghna Gulzar and is a crime drama and is set for release on September 18. So the two actors are from different regional industries and together they are very special and make the film very interesting.
Kareena will be able to work with Prithviraj as she would like to see a different kind of cinema for Kareena. Prithviraj has established himself as one of Malayalam cinema's most powerful actors and is a leading actor in Indian cinema. His acting, directing, and producing work has earned him a lot of recognition beyond Kerala as well as on a Bollywood-South level and the work he does with Kareena brings a Bollywood-South flavor to Daayra.
Kareena's South cinema connections might be even more significant if she does work with Dhanush. Kareena is in talks with Dhanush to play the lead in a large-scale mythological jungle adventure with filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, according to industry sources. The project should be considered a development but not a casting announcement at the moment.
If the collaboration would happen, it would mark the first on-screen collaboration of Kareena and Dhanush. Both actors have had very different careers and have developed a talent for playing a variety of characters, so to see them together as they work out as one actor and another actor and not just as a couple is quite intriguing.
Dhanush is now one of India’s most well-known actors and he has now moved from Tamil to Hindi films and Hindi to other languages. His filmography has seen commercial entertainment as well as hit dramas and his work outside acting has only strengthened his position in the Indian film industry.
Kareena has enjoyed a long and successful career in Hindi cinema. From major commercial releases to performance-oriented projects, she has tried different genres throughout her career. Her recent choices suggest a willingness to work with filmmakers and actors from different parts of the country.
The reported Dhanush project will be important as well, given its size and genre. A mythological jungle adventure set in place with a director like Bhansali could offer Kareena a very different role from the contemporary characters we have seen her play in the last few years. The plot, character, production schedule, and other cast members are still not confirmed.
Kareena’s reported South collaborations come with the rapid growth of Pan-India cinema. Films from different languages have brought actors from Bollywood and regional industries together more frequently. And audiences have also become more comfortable watching stars from different film industries together.
Kareena had previously been linked by rumours to other big South Indian projects. She was rumored to have been working with Prabhas' Spirit and Yash's Toxic. But those collaborations did not happen and so she would be in the current proximity of Prithviraj as the more immediate South Indian connection.
A possible future film with Dhanush could strengthen Kareena’s standing in this increasingly interconnected movie industry even further. It could also bring her into the consciousness of Tamil or other regional-language cinema audiences who mainly watch Tamil or other regional-language cinema.
Social media has already been reporting Kareena's reported choices and her desire to work with big South Indian stars on collaborations with major South Indian stars. Many have also commented on the move as an expansion into the Pan-India space, while others have pointed out that Bollywood actors have been stepping in this space more and more in the last few years.
Instead of language or industry boundaries, these collaborations also allow actors to work with various storytelling traditions and filmmakers in such a way that they can also bring new flavors that were not even possible in earlier Indian cinema.
For Kareena, Daayra will be a key project and she will be sharing the screen with Prithviraj under Meghna Gulzar’s direction. And if the talks with Dhanush eventually lead to an official announcement, then there will be another huge addition to her filmography.
As Pan-India becomes a bigger part of Indian cinema, the more Kareena’s collaborations seem to suggest that the actress is open to new combinations and larger storytelling spaces. How these collaborations will go long term is to be seen, but her association with Prithviraj and the possibility of working with Dhanush have already generated an interest among film fans.
