Mirzapur The Movie Eyes Rs. 200 Crore Club After Strong Monday Hold
Mirzapur The Movie is one of the biggest box-office successes in recent times. It started strong on its opening day and continued to grow through the extended holiday weekend as well. After crossing Rs. 100 crore mark in four days Mirzapur The Movie trade experts are now talking about whether it can go all the way to Rs. 200 crore club also!
The film opened with Rs. 24.47 crores on day one but went up significantly over the weekend. It collected Rs. 31.30 crores on Saturday and then Rs. 35.18 crores on Sunday taking its opening weekend total to Rs. 90.95 crores which gave it a solid platform for its theatrical run.
What has impressed the trade is how Mirzapur The Movie performed on Monday. Even as the long holiday weekend ended and audiences went back to their regular weekday schedules, Mirzapur The Movie continued to draw crowds. More than Rs. 10 crores came in on Monday and so it comfortably crossed the Rs. 100 crore mark in four days.
The strong Monday hold has also given a jolt of confidence about the film’s long-term box office potential. When trade veteran Taran Adarsh was asked whether Mirzapur The Movie can enter Rs. 200 crore club he said it is possible but the run of Haiwaan (the upcoming film) may affect its run as well.
Distributor and exhibitor Raj Bansal was even more optimistic about the film’s chances. “The way Mirzapur The Movie is doing right now Rs. 200 crores could be quite easy to achieve,” he said. “Secondly there isn’t much competition in front of it in near future.” Haiwaan is expected to come as another big release but Bansal feels that it will target a different section of audience.
Trade analyst Atul Mohan also said Rs. 200 crores lifetime collection is achievable but producer and film business analyst Girish Johar was more cautious saying that it is too early to make any predictions as yet. “We should celebrate the fact that audience have given such a great response to the film right now,” he says.
The success of Mirzapur The Movie is also important because of the changing face of Hindi film industry. The film’s performance (along with Hanuman Ansh) has once again questioned whether established star power is necessary at the box office- both movies have attracted audiences without relying heavily on conventional superstar-led formulas.
Taran Adarsh said how amazing the Sunday business of both these films was. Mirzapur The Movie and Hanuman Ansh earned about Rs 57 crores on Sunday combined. Their weekend business reportedly stood at around Rs 140 crores which has surprised many sections of industry.
Adarsh also said that Mirzapur The Movie should collect more than Rs. 10 crores on Monday after such a massive holiday weekend. Monday collections are generally considered an indicator of audience demand because the day marks the return to normal working schedules after the weekend and holidays.
Raj Bansal also talked about the popularity of films which are not based on big stars. He mentioned recent hits such as Saiyaara and Awarapan 2’s performance while talking about how audience acceptance can sometimes trump star power. High budgets for star driven productions put more pressure on the box office (expensive overseas schedules, large actor fees) he said because production costs go up.
In contrast, Bansal used Hanuman Ansh as an example of how a film made on a low budget can give big returns if audiences like it. The larger point is that theatrical success is increasingly about how well a film’s cost relates to its eventual box-office performance.
For Mirzapur The Movie the immediate target is to hold on to its momentum during weekdays. If it keeps on doing well and has little competition then Rs 200 crore could become a real possibility. Next big test will therefore be if that strong post-holiday hold continues in coming days.
Already crossing Rs. 100 crores in four days the trade has a lot to be optimistic about. Mirzapur The Movie will reach Rs. 200 crores eventually — but only if its weekday stability, word-of-mouth and upcoming releases are strong enough. Right now though its opening and Monday performance have made it one of the year’s marquee theatrical hits.
