Paresh Rawal Breaks Silence on Hera Pheri 3 Exit, Says It Was Never About Akshay Kumar
Paresh Rawal finally opened up on his exit from Hera Pheri 3 and why it was so much more than Akshay Kumar. In a recent interview, Rawal said it was contractual reasons of the franchise that he had to leave from.
Paresh Rawal strongly denied the speculation that he was uncomfortable working with Akshay Kumar. The decision was purely legal and contractual.
And no, it wasn’t the question of “I’m uncomfortable working with Akshay Kumar.” It was a contractual obligation. I needed the approval of Firoz Nadiadwala to do the film as he owns the Hera Pheri franchise. And also of other films like Awara Paagal Deewana, Welcome, and all of that. And so to the extent that I had to get his approval I just couldn’t commit.”
Rawal emphasized that producer Firoz Nadiadwala holds the rights to the Hera Pheri franchise, so it was crucial to get his approval to make a deal with the film before any commitment to the film was made. Without these contractual requirements, he cannot go through with it, he said.
Akshay Kumar's legal notice also turned out to be disappointing to him and frustrating, he said. Rawal said the legal action made him question if he wanted to continue with the project.
Reflecting on the incident, he said:
“When the legal notice came, I thought, ‘Why am I getting dragged into legal issues? Am I here to enjoy making a film or to get caught up in this?’ I told myself I didn’t want to be part of it anymore.”
Paresh Rawal, however, claimed that he thought the notice was driven more by emotion than hostility. He also feels Akshay Kumar may have felt emotionally affected by his decision to step away from the project.
“I truly believe the legal notice was an emotional reaction. It was probably a case of, ‘How could he say no to me?’ He must have been emotionally disturbed.”
The actor's words have revived discussions about the future of Hera Pheri 3 -- one of Bollywood's most eagerly awaited comedy sequels. The audience has long been waiting for Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, and Suniel Shetty to reunite in a big way, so Rawal's departure is of real interest.
For all the deniability of his own personal feelings towards Akshay Kumar, he also points out that Bollywood films can be very lucrative and franchise-based with movie contracts and franchise ownership that influence casting decisions. The fate of the three is up in the air when we will see the trio come together again, but Paresh Rawal has stressed that he left because of legal reasons and not personal problems.
