Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan May Reunite After 19 Years In Shah Rukh Khan’s King
Shah Rukh Khan’s King could bring Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan back together two decades after Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, with Abhishek playing the antagonist.
Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming action thriller King is one of the most eagerly awaited Bollywood movies of all time and with its huge ensemble cast and ambitious scope is already making it very eagerly awaited by the masses. Now, it could bring the movie's next one back to give audiences even more nostalgia, with reports that the film will be another nostalgic reunion with Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan showing up again in the movie’s title character.
Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan could appear together in King and may even be opposite each other. If it is true they will be seen together, we will see their first onscreen reunion in nearly 20 years. The two actors were last seen together in the 2007 film Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, making their possible collaboration in King particularly interesting for fans who have followed their careers over the years.
Rani and Abhishek have an impressive onscreen relationship. Their collaborations began with Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai in 2001 and continued through movies like Yuva, Bunty Aur Babli, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag. The actors made films of different genres and character dynamics from romantic stories and comedy to ensemble dramas. So when they come back together in a big action movie the setting will be so different from what they have done together.
What’s more intriguing to the reports is that Abhishek Bachchan is expected to play the antagonist in King. Details of his own character are unknown to be forthcoming, but his role as villain of Shah Rukh Khan’s character could bring the film to new heights and another major conflict in the film. It is not clear whether his connection to Rani Mukerji’s character in this movie will be romantic or not and whether it’s something else to do with them will be very different.
Rani Mukerji is also expected to reunite with Shah Rukh Khan in King. The two actors have appeared together in several popular movies including Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Veer-Zaara, Paheli. The last big collaboration was with Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna in 2006. A reunion of Shah Rukh and Rani after so long is just going to make the nostalgia of the project even stronger.
King’s likely casting would make it a particularly interesting mix of established Bollywood actors and younger actors. Shah Rukh Khan is heading this film, and his daughter Suhana Khan is also part of it. Deepika Padukone, Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff have also been suggested in the past. If Rani and Abhishek were to contribute as was reported, so are the many other actors from different periods of Hindi cinema.
King would be a big action thriller with high-end action and emotional storytelling and family structure with Siddharth Anand behind it. The movie is being set up by Red Chillies Entertainment and Marflix Pictures which is being made on a budget of around Rs 400 crore.
The film is also generating considerable commercial interest ahead of its release. King’s all-India theatrical distribution rights have been sold for around Rs 250 crore. Bollywood Hungama has reported that Pen Marudhar acquired the theatrical distribution rights, and it is one of the year’s biggest distribution deals.
Despite the growing buzz on King’s storyline and character arcs, there are still far less known details on King’s plot and character development. The reports on Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan and Abhishek’s alleged antagonist role are yet to be confirmed by the filmmakers.
At present, seeing Rani and Abhishek reunited after nearly 20 years has added another layer of suspense to King. The film will be made by Shah Rukh Khan in the lead and there is a lot of Bollywood stars around him, so Siddharth Anand is going to be one of the big Bollywood movies to watch out for.
