Rukmini Maitra’s Big Bollywood Leap: Bengali Star to Romance Akshay Kumar in ‘Samuk’?
Rukmini Maitra is in the news in Bollywood as reports linked her with Akshay Kumar's upcoming sci-fi action thriller Samuk.
The Kanishk Varma directorial is currently being shot in the UK and will go on show in 2027.
Maitra has been cast or is in negotiations to play the female lead opposite Akshay Kumar. The filmmakers didn’t release a lot of information on her character.
Maitra's association with Samuk is yet another step in a career that started in the Bengali cinema with her.
She came into films in 2017, firstly in sports drama Chaamp with Dev and then Cockpit, Kabir, Kidnap, Password, Switzerland, Kishmish, Boomerang and Tekka. Her work became popular among Bengali filmgoers.
Maitra has also acted in Hindi films. She appeared in the 2021 action thriller Sanak with Vidyut Jammwal, a big step beyond the Bengali movie industry.
Her involvement in Samuk will give her a far larger Hindi-language platform and her audience is really big.
She has delivered one of the best performances of her career with Binodiini - Ekti Natir Upakhyan, where she played the great Bengali theatre character Binodini Dasi.
The role required a drastic change and showed a different side of her acting skills. The movie also solidified her ability to portray challenging period characters.
Samuk is another big project for Akshay Kumar as well. The film is directed by Kanishk Varma and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and is a science fiction action thriller with survival and alien elements.
The team has also worked with an international technical team such as production designer Chris Peters and creature designer Alec Gillis.
The film also reunites Akshay Kumar with producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah after several years.
Samuk will have global attention well before the release date in 2027 due to its international production scale and unusual genre.
If Maitra is cast in the film, Samuk will become a major milestone to step up from Bengali cinema to mainstream Hindi films.
And for an actress who has developed her career through regional and Hindi projects, the presence of one of Bollywood’s biggest actors in the film could increase her national profile.
