Sayani Gupta Wins Interim Court Relief in ₹9 Crore ‘Aasmani’ Defamation Case
Actor and filmmaker Sayani Gupta has received interim relief from a Mumbai Civil Court in her ₹9 crore defamation case against filmmaker Vinita Negi in the matter of her directorial debut short film Aasmani.
The court’s interim order limits publication, circulation, broadcasting or dissemination of material that is defamatory against Gupta. It also tells platforms and some media organisations to remove material that is defamatory.
But the court said that the order does not prevent accurate and verified information from being published in the media based on official records or judicial proceedings.
How the ‘Aasmani’ Dispute Began
The legal battle comes in the wake of allegations against Vinita Negi about Aasmani, Gupta’s first short fiction film as a writer, director and producer.
Negi, who is an alumna of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), said the film was like her unfinished documentary Prabha.
Both projects feature an elderly woman and a vintage car, among other things, according to court filings and reports.
Negi had accused Gupta of copyright infringement and breach of trust. Gupta denied the allegations and said they were false, misleading and defamatory.
Gupta’s legal argument is partly on the distinction between ideas and their expression under copyright law.
Her plea held that generic creative elements such as an elderly woman, a car or a driver cannot by themselves establish exclusive ownership over an idea or concept.
₹9 Crore Defamation Claim
Gupta then approached Mumbai City Civil Court and sought ₹9 crore in damages against Negi. Her suit also sought removal of the allegedly defamatory material, a public apology and a retraction.
The actor-filmmaker said that the controversy had damaged her professional reputation and the prospects of Aasmani. Negi had approached the Screenwriters Association in April 2026 while the dispute was still being considered, she said.
Gupta also claimed that a "Statement of Support" was circulated through WhatsApp and social media and received more than 250 signatures from members of the film fraternity.
Her plea claimed that some signatories had not independently viewed Aasmani or the material associated with Negi’s documentary.
Impact on the Film
Gupta also stated that the allegations were sent to film festivals where Aasmani had been selected.
According to her plea, the controversy contributed to the short film being withdrawn from the Indian Film Festival of New Zealand, thereby undermining its chances at a festival and her professional standing.
The proceedings also involve Meta Platforms, Reddit and Deccan Chronicle Holdings Limited, among others.
Court Order and What Happens Next
The interim relief is also temporary to protect Gupta from the dissemination of statements that the court finds defamatory. But, the court also pointed out, “the order is not a blanket restriction on reporting verified facts or pursuing legitimate legal remedies.”
The copyright and defamation disputes will be the subject of further legal action. The interim order is therefore only an update of the legal process and is not a final determination on whether Aasmani infringed copyright.
The case has just got real but we are seeing the boundaries of creative ideas, copyright protection, public accusations and professional reputation in India’s film industry come to the fore again.
