Shabana Azmi was emotional and deeply personal when she spoke at the trailer launch of Rajkumar Santoshi’s new film Batwara 1947 in Delhi. A few hours later, actress Shabana Azmi spoke on the record; she said that while shooting one particular scene of that film made her feel deeply embarrassed and “completely stripped of her dignity,” she felt “deeply humiliated and completely stripped of her dignity,” which she said was the most painful moment in her five-decade-long acting career.
Shabana, well-known for her powerful performances and commitment to realistic storytelling, said the intensity of the scene affected her on a personal level, despite her extensive experience in the film industry.
A Scene That Left a Lasting Impact
During the event, Shabana Azmi referred to a sequence that is briefly visible in the film’s trailer.
In the scene, her character is allegedly assaulted by the antagonist, who drags her using her dupatta and tears her kurta. Speaking about the experience, the actress said the moment made her feel extremely vulnerable.
She said as a person, she felt so humiliated while filming the sequence. She had never felt so exposed or emotionally vulnerable before in front of the camera, she said.
And while it was a fictional character, the emotional weight of the scene was enough for her to remember.
Sunny Deol’s Presence Brought Comfort
Shabana Azmi also recalled what happened immediately after the emotionally demanding sequence.
In the film, Sunny Deol’s character comes to her rescue and covers her with a dupatta.
In recalling that moment, she said it didn’t feel like two actors; it felt like a scene. Rather, she was really protected, describing Sunny as her son and guardian.
She was so excited to welcome him wholeheartedly and felt great relief, she said, and she felt so grateful that he had come to save her character in the sequence.

Shabana Azmi thanked Sunny Deol for helping to make such an authentic emotional moment on screen.
She said if an actor with 50 years of experience could experience those emotions so truthfully because of the support and performance of a co-actor, audiences would naturally feel the same intensity while watching the film.
