Shefali Shah Embraces A New Chapter As Author With Debut Book ‘The Audacity Of Being’
Bollywood actress Shefali Shah is now an author. On September 1, she published her first book "The Audacity Of Being" a deeply personal journey. Shefali has been an audience favorite with her performances on screen for years but her first book gives readers an opportunity to meet her through her thoughts, experiences, and reflections.
Shefali penned a loving post on social media on the way she came to writing a book that turned out to be an unlikely one. The actress reflected on school and recalled the awkward times with dictation and essays. As she recalled it, she got zero marks in dictation, she would see her written work covered with red corrections, and punctuation and capital letters were different.
For Shefali, the idea of being an author seemed far from who she had believed she was. Years later, she was holding a physical book that she had written. With characteristic self-deprecating humour, the actress said it was an act of sheer audacity, especially since she had never thought of herself as writing and publishing a book.
Her first book, The Audacity Of Being, seems to be so much based on this philosophy. Shefali has never been a literary expert but rather has written accurately and from the heart. She said that she used to think books were contributed by “important people” who had an important point to say. She did not consider herself a genius in literature but over time writing only began to be a part of the conversations she was having with people around her.
Shefali admitted to having written her thoughts in private and down on diaries or even scraps of paper. Social media changed that. What started out as something of a public service for her to share with a wider audience soon became an interactive exchange. Shefali's followers liked her posts, engaged with her humour and encouraged her to keep going.
As she told it, that encouragement was very important in the creation of her first book. Shefali said that writing wasn’t really to create a perfect, intellectually groundbreaking thing and that it was to share something real. The decision to turn those thoughts into a book makes sense because she had already been talking to her audience online.
And she made it clear that The Audacity Of Being is not a typical memoir. She doesn’t believe her life needs one, she said, but she wanted to tell a story that she alone had the right to tell. The distinction is important because the book seems to be aimed less at a conventional story of a celebrity life, and more at personal observations and honest reflections.
Shefali has also kept her expectations realistic. She wrote that she would love the book to be a bestseller and to take off on the charts but she also said that its success can’t be predicted. For her, just the thought that one reader might relate to what she has written is enough.
Her note also touched on an idea that has been at the heart of her career as an actor: creative expression comes at its best when it is expressed to someone else. Shefali believes if she is playing a character on screen or writing out her thoughts, then the work has another meaning, and audiences make it a part of themselves. Now she will be giving that sort of genuine expression to her readers in her first book.
The launch of The Audacity Of Being also adds another dimension to Shefali Shah’s career, which has always been defined by versatility. With a reputation for playing complex roles, she is one of the most celebrated actors in Hindi cinema and streaming entertainment. Her writing skills suggest that she is into something more than acting.
On the acting side, Shefali was present in Delhi Crime Season 3 where she returned as DIG Vartika Chaturvedi. There is a large ensemble of actors with Rasika Dugal, Rajesh Tailang, Huma Qureshi, Sayani Gupta, Mita Vashisht, Anshumaan Pushkar and Kelly Dorji in the new season.
With The Audacity Of Being, she is now inviting audiences to see another side of her personality— not through a character created for the screen, but from her own words. What started as childhood struggles with dictation and punctuation has developed into a published book, so the recent achievement of Shefali Shah feels so personal.
