The Indian music community is mourning Sunila Pyarelal Sharma, the wife of the great composer Pyarelal Sharma of the legendary Laxmikant-Pyarelal duo. Sunila passed away here in Mumbai on 12th July 2026 in the company of her family.
Sunila was known as "Amma" to her family and loved ones as the emotional bedrock of the Sharma family and a source of support to Pyarelal for many years, in many ways for him throughout Pyarelal's long musical career as well. The cause of her death is not known but her death has not only shocked them; the news of her death brought on a wave of grief from the music industry, fans and those in the music industry, fans and people who loved her and well-wishers.
She is survived by her husband, children and extended family.
The Sharma family issued a statement on social media and remembered Sunila as a woman of great grace, dedication and unconditional love.
"Amma was a model of grace, dedication and quiet strength and a pillar of unconditional love to everyone who knew her. We have never really been in complete peace and that is the thing that we know is true of her."
The family also thanked relatives, friends and admirers for their prayers and support during this difficult time.
"Your work here is beautifully finished, Amma. Rest in eternal peace,” the statement concluded.
According to family members, Sunila Sharma's last rites will be held on Monday, July 13, at the Santacruz Crematorium in Mumbai, with the funeral on 11:30 a.m. and many of the music and entertainment personalities are expected to attend.
Though Sunila Sharma mostly kept herself away from the limelight, she was familiar with and respected in the Indian music scene. She frequently accompanied Pyarelal Sharma in his concerts, awards ceremonies and TV shows and was at his side throughout his distinguished career.
In recent years, television audiences came to know her through the popular singing reality shows of which she appeared together with Pyarelal. One of her most memorable appearances came on Indian Idol Season 13, when a special tribute episode was dedicated to Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Sanchari Sen Gupta and her mother presented Sunila with the specially handcrafted sari, as well as the most emotional moment of the season.
She also appeared on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa and Superstar Singer and was known for performing traditional aartis, blessing contestants and encouraging aspiring singers with warmth and affection.
She never had a career in music but friends and family said she helped Pyarelal Sharma much more. Her quiet presence and encouragement of one of India's greatest composers would be to inspire generations of music lovers.
Sunila Sharma’s death is the close of a chapter in one of Indian cinema’s most celebrated musical families. But for her life she was a kind person and the wife of a great composer and a very humble person who was kind and touched many lives with her kindness.
May Sunila Pyarelal Sharma rest in eternal peace, and may her family find strength during this difficult time.
