Sunita Ahuja Seeks Support For Nepal Flood Relief, Says ‘My Mother And Grandmother Are From Kathmandu’
Sunita Ahuja has expressed her distress at the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal and has appealed for support for those affected. Govinda's wife, who is very much localized and deeply connected, has said she wants to make a great big contribution towards relief efforts but is still trying to find a way to get her money to those who need it most.
Sunita said she is looking for someone to help get her contribution to the right people regarding the humanitarian crisis. She also said she would be more than happy to donate as much as possible, which is because she is very much in love with Nepal.
"I am trying to reach someone who can make sure that my donation reaches the right people. I want to donate as much as I can because they are very close to me and Nepal is my matrabhoomi," Sunita said.
Sunita’s situation is particularly wrenching because of her family’s connection to Nepal; her mother and grandmother are from Nepal. She was not born in the country, but she did tell me that her mother and grandmother are from Kathmandu. This family connection has made the floods and landslides so painful for her to witness.
"It is heartbreaking to see such devastating floods hit Nepal. I wasn’t born there, but my mother and grandmother are from Kathmandu," she said.
Sunita also spoke about her family's longstanding connection with Nepal and the tradition she follows with her daughter. She said she visits Nepal every year around New Year and makes it a point to seek blessings at the revered Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu.
"I visit Nepal every year with my daughter for New Year. On January 1, we make it a point to visit the Pashupatinath temple and begin the year with His blessings," Sunita said.
Her statement comes at a time when Nepal is dealing with the devastating effects of floods and landslides across several regions of the country. The disaster has destroyed communities, and many thousands of people have been killed or are missing. Humanitarian organizations are calling for immediate assistance.
Sunita further called on the Hindi film industry to come forward and support those affected and the people who lost their homes in the flood. She also asked her colleagues and her peers in the entertainment industry to help in relief work and help to rebuild the damaged areas in the aftermath of the floods.
"I ask all in the industry to come forward and contribute towards helping the people of Nepal," she said.
The death toll linked to the disaster in Nepal and China had crossed 1,000 by Tuesday. Nepal's disaster agency reported 987 deaths, and 3,916 people were still missing. The missing ones are believed to be 583 foreigners, underlining how widespread the disaster has been and the difficulty in the rescue and relief work.
The floods and landslides have caused extensive damage to the country’s infrastructure; however, rescue efforts and search and recovery for missing people are still ongoing amid high-risk and difficult conditions for those involved. With a humanitarian crisis and the disaster, donations and assistance are increasingly needed as the situation worsens.
Sunita's plea adds a voice from the Indian entertainment industry to the growing concern over the crisis. Her personal connection to Kathmandu and her annual visits to Nepal have given her plea a particular emotional dimension. Through a trusted channel for her own contribution and calling others in the film industry to help, she believes the flood and landslide families will be more likely to be helped.
The actor’s wife also insists her aim is to provide any financial aid that she is able to give to those who really need it. So far she’s focused on helping victims, finding the missing, and helping people who are still affected by one of the most devastating natural disasters in the region.
