New Delhi: Hindi cinema has seen many great on-screen pairings, but one combination that never returned after a single movie was Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra. The two iconic actors were seen in the 1973 thriller Gehri Chaal only once in the film, which left the audience wondering why Bollywood never reunited the two iconic actors.
Now, film historian Dilip Thakur has revealed the reason behind this rare event and shares some of the insights from a conversation he had with Jeetendra years ago.
A Rare Collaboration in Bollywood History
The director's production in 1973 was Gehri Chaal, which is the only film with Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra in it. At that time, both actors were still establishing themselves in the Hindi film industry and went on to become two of Bollywood's biggest superstars.
They had remarkable talent and as such worked together to make the movie, but they never worked any more than on a single project.
Dilip Thakur Shares Jeetendra's Explanation
In an exclusive conversation with News9 Digital, veteran film historian Dilip Thakur recalled asking Jeetendra why he never worked with Amitabh Bachchan again after Gehri Chaal.
According to Thakur, the conversation happened during a film shoot in Hyderabad where the media were able to meet the veteran actor.
Thakur said he asked Jeetendra a simple question:
"You and Amitabh Bachchan worked together only once. Why did you never get another opportunity?"
Jeetendra's answer, Thakur said, provided an interesting perspective of how their careers evolved.
Different Career Paths
Jeetendra told us that after Gehri Chaal, both actors gradually moved in completely different directions.
While Amitabh Bachchan was Bollywood's dominant action hero and produced blockbuster movies that cemented his “Angry Young Man” image, Jeetendra carved his own successful identity with family dramas, romantic entertainers, and social films.
Jeetendra also became associated with South Indian filmmakers in the late 1970s and 1980s and frequently worked with renowned directors like:
K. Raghavendra Rao, Dasari Narayana Rao
These movies, many of them remakes of Telugu hits, helped Jeetendra earn the nickname “Jumping Jack” and further developed his career in commercial family entertainment.
Their film choices never crossed again
As both actors got busier with their movie line-ups, there wasn’t a lot of time for cooperation.
Jeetendra said no personal conflict or professional rivalry existed between them. Their careers simply went in different directions, and no project would bring them back together.
Looking back at Jeetendra's filmography, he appeared in many multi-starrer movies with Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra, Shatrughan Sinha, and many others. But Amitabh Bachchan was not part of those combinations.
Two Icons, Two Distinct Legacies
Even though they appeared together only once, both Amitabh Bachchan and Jeetendra went on to achieve extraordinary careers.
Amitabh Bachchan became one of Indian cinema's greatest actors with classics like Zanjeer, Deewaar, Sholay, Don, and Agneepath, while Jeetendra became synonymous with blockbuster family entertainers and memorable dance performances in movies like Himmatwala, Tohfa, and Justice Chaudhury.
Their different career paths ultimately made up two cinematic legacies that will influence generations of actors and filmmakers to come.
More than five decades after Gehri Chaal, the movie is still a unique story of Bollywood history; it’s one of the few times two great actors were seen on the silver screen together.
