It is the much-loved Kahaani franchise is in the making for its third movie with a big casting change at its core. According to several media reports, Yami Gautam is going to play the lead in Kahaani 3 and Vidya Balan is going to be replaced. And Sujoy Ghosh will be the director of the next thriller film. And there will be a date for November 2026 to go into production.
The original Kahaani (2012) with Vidya Balan as Vidya Bagchi made it one of Bollywood’s most celebrated mystery thrillers. Its sequel Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh (2016) also featured Vidya in the lead. If the reports are true, Kahaani 3 will take the franchise in a fresh direction with a completely different story and a different lead character.
The film will not carry on the storyline from the last films, but it will be a separate story that is set in the Kahaani universe and it will retain the suspense, emotional depth, and gripping storytelling of the franchise.
Yami Gautam is being cast. With several award-winning films recently, she is now set to have a strong character arc as well as working with director Sujoy Ghosh. In the pre-production phase, the creative team is finalizing schedules and other production details before shooting begins.
Sujoy Ghosh, who also directed the two previous Kahaani films, is working with his team to make the third film fresh in the sense that it retains the essence of the franchise. There are already so many excited people in the industry about this collaboration with Yami Gautam.
Social media reaction to the decision to move forward without Vidya Balan is mixed. One side is excited to see Yami Gautam lead a big thriller franchise, the other is that Vidya’s role defined the Kahaani series and it’s hard to replace her.
