Yash’s Toxic English Version Falls Flat: Only 450 Tickets Sold, Earns Rs 1.40 Lakh on Day 1
Yash’s Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is also seeing a second bad showing at the Indian box office as its English version was launched to such a poor response.
When it was released in limited Indian cinemas on September 4, the English cut sold only around 450 tickets across the country, and earned around Rs 1.40 lakh on its opening day.
The English version premiered nearly a week after the film’s original theatrical release.
Toxic first came to Kannada with Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam versions on August 26. The English edition, which had already been released overseas, finally reached select Indian screens on September 4.
According to box office data reported by Bollywood Hungama, the English version was seen through just 11 shows across four cities - Mumbai, Bengaluru, Gurugram and Noida.
Mumbai and Bengaluru had comparatively better occupancy, while the response in Gurugram and Noida was particularly poor, with less than 25 tickets sold in each city.
The bad opening is a problem for Toxic. The film had been eagerly awaited as it is Yash’s return after the huge KGF: Chapter 2.
Geetu Mohandas’ gangster drama also stars Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Tara Sutaria and Huma Qureshi.
Although Toxic had a huge opening from all languages, its momentum has dissipated considerably in the days since release.
The film has had mixed reactions and also been challenged from other films. The release of Mirzapur The Movie and Hanuman Ansh’s performance are also putting pressure on Yash-starrer.
The English version was also presented as a shorter cut of the movie. The Indian-language version runs for more than three hours while the English theatrical cut runs for about 2 hours and 57 minutes.
The filmmakers said that the English edition was one of the languages the film was written and shot in.
Despite the poor English response, Toxic has already made a good initial theatrical gross. The film made over Rs 100 crore worldwide on the first day and then dropped off significantly from there.
For the English version, however, the immediate numbers are concerning. Only around 450 tickets sold on day one, and if occupancy doesn’t improve over the weekend its theatrical presence may become less of a big deal.
The poor performance raises questions about the need of English-language versions of the biggest Indian movies when there are already regional and dubbed versions available to the public.
For Toxic, the English cut seems to have failed to create enough theatrical demand in spite of the star power and large-scale cast.
