Erling Haaland has started the new football season with a look that is almost as attention-grabbing as his goals. The Manchester City and Norway striker has cut off his famous long blonde locks, replacing one of the most recognisable hairstyles in world football with a much shorter, fresher style.

His transformation came as soon as he came to Manchester City’s first league match against AFC Bournemouth and it sent fans into a frenzy. Haaland posted a picture of his new look on Instagram and his caption was brief and assured: “Short hair don’t care.” The simple message quickly became a social media talking point and showed how closely the striker’s appearance has been tied to his public persona.
Haaland had already offered fans an insight into the decision-making process through a video on his YouTube channel entitled “New Season, New Hair!!”. The Norwegian said he had been considering cutting his hair after the 2026 FIFA World Cup but he just didn’t have the time to make the switch. Now that the new season was on its way he decided it was time for a new start.
The striker initially seemed ready for a rather short military-style haircut. Haaland said he wanted something like a buzz cut and even showed his hairstylist pictures for inspiration when discussing his plans. But eventually he decided not to go quite so short and opted for a more relaxed look instead.
The final choice was a “wavy shag,” which gives Haaland a very different look but still retains some of the personality of the old hairstyle. Yet the new haircut is not completely his last look; it is somewhat of a compromise between the long locks fans were used to and the very short buzz cut he had originally envisioned.
The haircut was not without nerves. Haaland said he was slightly anxious about making such a big change, especially because his hair has become so heavily associated with his image. His hairstylist also seemed to understand it was a big moment, saying that it was “the most expensive haircut of all time” and acknowledging the pressure of working on the football superstar.
Haaland’s friends were among the first to react to the transformation, with the striker telling them to show off his new look. Their responses were not unanimous, and it’s not easy for fans and friends to cope with a celebrity who changes so dramatically from looking like such an old-school celebrity.
The huge response on the internet demonstrated how influential Haaland has been beyond the football pitch. His Instagram reveal got millions of likes; his haircut vlog attracted millions of views and thousands of comments very soon. The speed of response to Haaland’s video shows that people’s interest in him is as much in Haaland as it is in the fact that he’s one of football’s greatest goalscorers.
For years, his flowing blonde hair and signature man bun have been almost as recognizable as his powerful left foot and trademark goal celebrations. His hairstyle became a part of his brand especially as his international and club status developed. Supporters began copying elements of his look and accessories associated with his hairstyle also became more prominent.
The popularity of Haaland’s hair accessories even extended to commercial collaborations. Oslo-based brand KKNEKKI, famous for the hair ties worn by the Norwegian star, introduced a limited-edition collection with Haaland around the World Cup. The collection sold out, which proved just how one small part of the striker’s personal style has come to be a fan phenomenon.
Haaland’s haircut is therefore more than a haircut. It is the beginning of another chapter for a player who has become one of the biggest stars in world football. His goals, physical presence, personality and unique image have made him a player recognized even at a casual level of sports fans.
The timing of the change is also important. A new season always brings new ambitions for elite athletes and Haaland’s decision to cut his hair fits nicely into that theme. Whether the shorter style brings any additional luck on the pitch remains to be seen, but expectations surrounding the striker will remain enormous.
At its best Haaland has shown that a haircut can be a major sporting story when the person who undergoes the change is one of football’s most recognizable figures. And the golden locks that once flew behind him at goal celebrations are gone for now, replaced with a totally different look.
His fans might need some time to get used to it, but Haaland is ready to embrace the change. And with another hard-pressed season ahead, the message of his transformation is simple: new hair, new season and, possibly, another long list of goals.
