Nikhil Nagesh Bhat is preparing to become Hollywood’s top director with Deadlocked - the high-octane action thriller with Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx. It comes just after Bhat’s action film Kill, which established him as one of India’s top action filmmakers and received rave reviews from both fans and critics for its fast-paced action.

Deadlocked will be released globally on Prime Video in India and show Bhat's unique style of cinema internationally to a global audience with the help of Amazon MGM Studios. For the filmmaker's first film, Deadlocked is a huge deal— and also for Indian cinema as more and more Indian directors are being recognized in major Hollywood films.

According to industry reports, Deadlocked is an action-packed thriller about a grieving former Marine who is summoned for jury duty in a high-profile criminal trial. What begins as a simple civic duty suddenly becomes an existential threat when the daughter of the defendant’s lawyer takes on a hostage takeover inside the courtroom in a desperate effort to free her father. The former Marine is trapped in the building with innocent civilians and has to rely on his military skills and combat experience to stop the attackers and save the civilians from the siege.

The screenplay was written by Eric Scott Anderson (The Black Fox) and Matt Takejiro Bosack (NCIS: Hawai'i). The film is being produced by Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Fred Berger for Range, Dave Caplan for C2, and Jamie Foxx is producing under his Foxxhole Productions banner. AJ Bourscheid, Liz Destro, Paul Currie, and Corinne Foxx are executive producers.

Jamie Foxx adds a lot of star power to the project. The Academy Award-winning actor is one of Hollywood’s most versatile actors, balancing dramatic performances with action-packed roles. He was recently seen in Netflix’s action comedy Back in Action with Cameron Diaz, which performed strongly with global audiences. Foxx will also work on the forthcoming boxing drama Fight for '84, inspired by real events.

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat has long been a storyteller in his own right. His first international hit was Kill, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2023 and will be released in 2024. Lakshya, Raghav Juyal, and Tanya Maniktala are in the film, and a National Security Guard commando is fighting ruthless criminals in a moving train to save his partner and others.

Kill quickly became a popular action movie for its raw, realistic, and brutally choreographed action, with many international critics comparing its style to some of the world's greatest action thrillers. The film was also a bold creative step for Dharma Productions, a production house that had always specialized in romantic dramas and family entertainment. Kill was an uncompromising action story that resonated with audiences both in India and abroad.

Kill was a big hit commercially and grossed more than ₹47 crore worldwide and received widespread critical acclaim. It also got awards nominations and won six Filmfare Awards, including Best Debut for the lead actor Lakshya. Bhat got recognition in international studios looking for directors who can make a good action movie in a grounded and character-driven world.

Apart from Kill, Bhat has been able to move among genres in Apurva, Hurdang, and the web series Rasbhari and The Gone Game. It is his emotional storytelling with suspense and action in which he has come to the fore of Indian cinema in recent years.

Recently, Bhat was also linked to Parshuram, an action thriller with Sunny Deol. However, with his Hollywood debut now officially underway, it remains uncertain whether that project will move forward in the near future. Industry experts say that Deadlocked could create more international opportunities for Bhat, particularly if the film succeeds on the global streaming platform.

Nikhil Nagesh Bhat and Jamie Foxx’s collaboration mirrors a growing appreciation for Indian filmmakers as part of Hollywood’s growing recognition of them. International studios are hungry for fresh voices to make action movies, and Indian directors are now finding new platforms beyond domestic productions.

For Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, Deadlocked is more than just an entry in Hollywood but the beginning of a career that has rapidly developed from an acclaimed Indian director to a global director. Deadlocked has already generated much interest among movie industry professionals, with Amazon MGM Studios backing the project and Jamie Foxx starring in it. If Deadlocked meets expectations, it will only cement Bhat's place among the most sought-after action directors in world cinema today.
