South Korean film and content studio Showbox is expanding into the rapidly growing short-form drama market with Showbite, a new label dedicated to microdramas. The new platform is developing a huge variety of original stories- romance, comedy, revenge, action, fantasy, mystery and horror (with the first wave of titles coming out in September 2026).
The launch marks Showbox’s first venture in Korean film and entertainment content. With audiences turning more and more towards mobile and short-form media, Showbite wants to marry Korean storytelling with the fast-paced structure of microdramas.
In fact, Showbite has been designed to take Showbox’s storytelling expertise and translate the experience into a format that can be viewed by consumers in South Korea and internationally. Microdramas are not long TV shows (with more than one episode per show) and are much more compact in nature and so you can follow dramatic twists and character developments in shorter breaks.
Showbite's First Slate Covers Romance, Revenge and More
One of the first themes of Showbite’s first line-up is romance. ‘Taste of You’ follows two opponents who start to develop feelings for each other when they’re competing in a culinary competition. With rivalry at work, romance and food the series will be fun and light.
Another romantic comedy is “Love in Thailand”, around a golf resort and is supposed to mix relationship drama with comedic situations. “The New Hire Is Too Hot to Handle” takes the romance to an office setting and focuses on workplace relationships and attraction.
Love, Again is more emotional. A couple with lost memories get another shot at love when they are reunited. The concept could be romance, mystery and emotional drama in a short form format.
K-pop fans might also find something familiar in “My Ex-Bias Problem.” It tells the story of an arrogant idol whose life is upended when he is sent to a remote island village. The series combines K-pop with romance and a strange change of setting drama.
Female-Led Revenge Stories Add More Drama
Showbite also has a lot of stories with revenge and family conflict in its line-up of stories. “The Fallen Heiress Returns Wicked”, “They Messed with the Wrong Daughter-in-Law” and “Contract Marriage: The Heir’s Hound” are female-led projects that seem to focus on powerful characters facing betrayal, manipulation and difficult relationships.
Such high-conflict stories are particularly popular in short-form entertainment because they can deliver a major twist or confrontations in a short time or keep viewers interested from one episode (and sometimes more) to the next.
Asura: Return of the Reaper is for more action for the action crime thriller genre. The title suggests violence, crime and revenge and Showbite is a project aimed at audiences beyond the romance genre.
Period Drama and Fantasy Join the Lineup
Showbite is not limited to current scenarios. “The Secret Wife Exchange” is a period drama set against the backdrop of Joseon society and brings historical elements into the microdrama format.
Her Royal Queen Energy uses reincarnation and fantasy with modern Korean monarchy as an alternative. The unusual premise gives it another way to experiment with fantasy storytelling but with elements that are familiar to Korean drama audiences.
Mystery and horror are also present in the first slate. Bridal Shower: The Missing Bride brings mystery and comedy to the table, and The Fallen Idol Is Possessed! brings together K-pop, romance and supernatural elements.
Lucky Horror Live Show is about a livestream that transforms into a very real horror. It’s an idea that is right for short-form storytelling: social media, livestreams and digital culture are all part of the story.
When Will Showbite Dramas Be Released?
Showbite will be releasing its first titles in September 2026. Showbox has yet to reveal individual premiere dates for each project. The streaming platforms or services that will carry the dramas have also not been officially confirmed.
Showbite's social media presence will be a big source for information prior to the launch. The official accounts on TikTok, Instagram and YouTube will be launched in early September, and can provide announcements about release dates, trailers, clips and information on production.
Who Is in the Cast?
At this time, the cast details for the individual Showbite projects have not been announced. Showbox has shown the titles and basic concepts of its upcoming slate but the lead actors and supporting performers are still not known.
More casting information could emerge as the September launch gets closer. Given the number of titles in the first slate and the label’s plans for international distribution, further announcements are likely to give viewers a better picture of the talent attached to each production.
Showbite Has Global Ambitions
Showbox is also looking beyond the Korean market. Showbox wants to use industry events to introduce Showbite to potential international partners and explore wider distribution opportunities, the company said.
The label will also attend Broadcast Worldwide in Seoul and the Asian Contents & Film Market associated with the Busan International Film Festival. Those events could help Showbite establish partnerships for international distribution and strengthen its position in the ever-competitive microdrama space.
With its combination of romance, K-pop, revenge, historical drama, fantasy, crime, mystery and horror, Showbite is looking to give a broad entertainment landscape instead of a particular genre. The release date, streaming platforms and cast announcements are still pending but the September 2026 launch could be a big step in Korean short-form drama.
As microdramas continue to catch the attention of mobile-first audiences, Showbite’s biggest test will be whether Showbox will be able to make its strong storytelling qualities translate to shorter episodes with fast stories while making its productions accessible to a global audience.
