Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is an epic adaptation of Homer’s great Greek epic, combining beautiful visuals, strong performances and a rich, emotionally rich story. The film stars Matt Damon as Odysseus along with Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson and has been one of the most talked about releases of 2026. Most critics praised Nolan’s ambitious vision and called it one of his best movies.

The Odyssey movie review

One of the movie’s biggest strengths is its spectacular presentation. Shot extensively for IMAX, The Odyssey has beautiful landscapes, epic battle scenes, realistic practical effects and immersive cinematography that take you into the ancient world. Matt Damon is a strong warrior as the great warrior and Anne Hathaway and Tom Holland are both good in the supporting roles; characters that bring us to the place of life and it’s still the same thing but more emotional and real in the movie as our hero is.

The film is much more than just well-researched but has received some criticism. The Odyssey takes some time - it takes you to sit through, some critics and moviegoers say, and some parts of it are slow-paced. Other viewers will also point to Christopher Nolan’s well-known audio mixing style and how some of the dialogues are hard to hear. Others felt that the remake simplified Homer’s original mythology, and so the original narrative was less faithful to the text.

It has received good reactions from the audience, mostly positive; social media is glowing, with fans praising Nolan’s vision, with a lot of praise for Nolan’s leadership, the film’s visual grandeur, the film’s visual brilliance and emotional weight and emotional power and the emotional payoff. It’s a “masterpiece” in the opinion of many who have described it as such as one of the best theatrical experiences of the year and, most recently, one of the best in IMAX and the very best theater experiences of the year in that the movie as well. The film’s large-scale action is huge, the haunting music score and its large scale action, the moody soundtrack and the story-making has been praised so much so that it’s very impressive.

But not everyone was convinced. Some viewers felt that the movie tries to pack too much of Homer’s epic into one movie, so some of the story arcs feel rushed while others move too slowly. Some also believed that the dialogue occasionally sounded too modern for a Greek setting, and some expected more of the mythological gods and supernatural elements in the original poem.

The Odyssey stands out as one of the huge cinematic achievements of 2026. The movie is long and sprawling and Christopher Nolan is the mastermind behind it and its world of history and film history; one of the best movies of the year and the greatest movies of the next decade.
