Tom Holland has scored another Hollywood record. The actor is now the third highest grossing actor in Hollywood behind Zoë Saldaña and Scarlett Johansson. It is a sign of the huge commercial success Holland has enjoyed since he took over as Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At 30 years old, Holland is the youngest actor to make it into the top three box office. The vast majority of his huge theatrical reach has been based on the Spider-Man franchise, with his starring role turning him into one of the most popular stars of his generation. As the superhero blockbuster continues its epic global campaign, his latest film Spider-Man: Brand New Day has only strengthened his position.

The box office numbers have been excellent. Spider-Man: Brand New Day stayed at No. 1 at the North American box office for the fifth consecutive weekend, earning $22.2 million from theatres in the United States and Canada. And it took the film's worldwide total to $2.33 billion and passed another successful movie: The Untold Story.

With its latest milestone, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has moved past James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which finished its theatrical run with $2.32 billion worldwide. That puts Holland’s latest superhero adventure among the five highest-grossing movies of all time globally.

The current top five is currently dominated by Avatar which has earned around $2.92 billion worldwide (it is followed by Avengers: Endgame at around $2.79 billion). Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now in third place and is just ahead of Avatar: The Way of Water at $2.32 billion. Titanic rounds out the top five at about $2.25 billion.

The film’s domestic performance has been equally significant. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has just under $891 million in North America, and it is close to Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $936 million domestic total. So if the superhero movie can beat that number, then it might have to be near one of the most coveted box office milestones of all time: the $1 billion domestic figure.

Holland’s rise shows just how powerful the Spider-Man character has been for his career. Since he debuted as Peter Parker in several big Marvel movies, his version of the character is considered very popular, helping the franchise generate billions of dollars worldwide.

The great weekend, however, wasn’t only about Holland. Coyote vs. Acme was another big talking point at the North American box office. After Warner Bros. canceled the completed Looney Tunes project in its entirety, Ketchup Entertainment finally brought the hybrid live-action and animated film to cinemas. The movie took second place with an estimated $15.5 million domestically.

Starring Will Forte, John Cena and Lana Condor, the alleged $70 million production has received an overwhelmingly positive response from audiences and critics as well. The film received an "A" CinemaScore from the Rotten Tomatoes community and a 95% critics’ score, giving the long-delayed project a good start to its screening.

Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars was a bit of a soft start and was in fifth place with $8 million in the domestic box office and $11.3 million worldwide. Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey continued to perform well in the theater. The film earned around $14.3 million in North America and $48.6 million in international territories, for a total of $1.55 billion worldwide.

But for Holland, the weekend is just the next big chapter in a career that has blossomed in the past decade. From a rising star in one of the most coveted superhero roles to becoming one of the industry’s most popular box office performers, his story has been remarkable.

Holland’s commercial dominance still seems to be at an all-time high with Spider-Man: Brand New Day still dominating cinemas and his worldwide box office total of around $2.33 billion. He has now entered the top three highest-grossing actors and is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood today.
