Karnataka Halts Tamil Film Screenings Over Cauvery Protests

Demonstrations are now blocking screenings of Tamil films, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, in Karnataka because of the Cauvery water-sharing dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The decision comes after the cancellation of Tamil movies in several cinemas where people in Kannada-speaking areas had protested against the screening of Tamil films.

According to media reports, the Karnataka Film Exhibitors Association announced the statewide suspension on Friday. Protests in Mandya and Chamarajanagar followed protests at films in which some of the filmmakers’ supporters disrupted screenings, removed film posters, and asked theatres to stop showing Tamil movies until the Cauvery issue was resolved.

The films being affected are Vijay's Jana Nayagan, one of the biggest Tamil films of the year. There were even a few scheduled shows in Karnataka postponed, with some of the theatres cancelling the film in the city and replacing the movie with other releases to avoid law and order problems. There's been suggestions that the suspension will be in place until now, depending on the situation and direction from authorities.

For decades, the Cauvery river dispute has been a sensitive issue between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and protests always erupt for water-sharing decisions that lead to public anger. In the past, political tension over the dispute has even transcended into cultural and commercial ones such as cinema screenings and entertainment.

The developments have raised concerns for the film industry as Karnataka is one of the major markets for Tamil cinema outside Tamil Nadu. If ticket sales are affected on the day of screenings, they would impact box office collections, especially for big releases that rely on strong performance in South Indian states.

Jana Nayagan has already been generating much attention since its release, and now it has met the same challenges as before (cancellations of certification, piracy problems, and exhibition problems). And even though it was cancelled in Karnataka, the film continues its theatrical run in other places, where it has been drawing more and more audience interest.

Film exhibitors have pointed out that the suspension was a precautionary measure to protect public safety and prevent damage to cinema properties during protests. After that, they say, screenings can be resumed once the situation has calmed down and security arrangements are in place.

There has been no official announcement of when Tamil film screenings will resume in Karnataka. Theatre owners, distributors, and fans are in constant contact with the authorities and are monitoring developments as the law and order situation is being monitored and government officials are looking at the situation.
