Manoranjan Ravichandran (son of Kannada cinema’s Crazy Star Ravichandran) will have a chance to explore a new side of his acting skills. After a stint as a leading man in Sandalwood, the actor will take on a more difficult, dark character in Kaunteya (Kannada crime thriller) for the first time.
Produced by B.K. Chandrakas, who is also associated with Kumbharashi, ‘Kaunteya’ is built as an emotional crime thriller with murder mystery, police investigation and human drama. The police system, crime, and people’s emotions as subjects are in the middle of a complicated investigation in the heart of the story.
For Manoranjan, the project is particularly important because of his character. With the hero roles he has played so far, he is assumed to be completely negative in ‘Kaunteya’. Interestingly, this character may not be in the film at all, but it will be very important.
Manoranjan has described the role as an experiment and says it’s very different from what he’s tried before. The actor’s departure from the hero image could be the catalyst for his career direction. His performance will also be closely watched because playing an antagonist requires a different body language, dialogue delivery, and emotional expression.
Achyuth Kumar plays the movie's veteran actor Achyuth Kumar as Ranganath, a sub-inspector who is approaching retirement. His character contributes another emotional dimension to the plot, as a police officer and family man who is investigating a real-life criminal case.
Priyanka Thimmesh is also in the team and plays an ACP officer. Her character is going to be central to the investigation and could be at the heart of the movie’s development. Bigg Boss actress Neethu Vanajakshi is also playing a police officer and adds some new layers to the investigation.
Director B.K. Chandrakas has said that ‘Kaunteya’ isn’t just a movie about crime and violence. He thinks the filmmaker is trying to make sense of the toll of bloodshed while keeping human emotions central to the story and making it very much a human story. Murder mystery and emotional storytelling will help distinguish the film from the regular crime thriller genre.
The filmmakers have completed shooting in three schedules in Bengaluru and Mysuru, and the film is in the post-production stage, with re-recording and other technical work still to be done.
Raghavendra composed the music, and P.L. Ravi is handling cinematography. Anuranjan is involved with editing and dialogue. The technical team is trying to make the film an atmospheric experience, in keeping with its crime thriller setting.
Kaunteya is produced by Suresh Kumar under the banner of Sri Mahankali Pictures. In the film’s murder mystery, police investigation, emotional conflicts, and Manoranjan’s unexpected negative role are the main attractions.
The makers are targeting a November release. As the post-production work is almost complete, now the focus is on the film's promotional campaign and release date.
In Manoranjan Ravichandran’s account, “Kaunteya” might be a turning point. That he would go from playing heroes to showing a character with a negative attitude shows that he can make that kind of an experiment outside of his usual image. If he gets the antagonist memorable in the film, there could be a huge amount of new options for the actor.
With crime, investigation, suspense and emotional drama, ‘Kaunteya’ might offer Kannada audiences a different kind of thriller. Most importantly, Manoranjan’s transformation from hero to villain will be one of the film’s big talking points.
