The countdown to Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups has created quite a lot of discussion among Kannada cinema fans on whether Yash’s new film can compete with the biggest BookMyShow ticket sales records in Sandalwood. In the midst of one of the most eagerly awaited releases of recent years, we are seeing the numbers of the highest-grossing films of Kannada cinema.

According to BookMyShow’s trending ticket sales data, Kantara Chapter 1 has sold around 14.1 million tickets. Kantara’s popularity and the buzz for Rishab Shetty’s ambitious prequel are the reasons for this excellent performance. That is better than every other Kannada movie.

The second place belongs to Su From So, which has reached 2.60 million ticket sales and is one of the most successful Kannada theatrical releases in terms of audience turnout. Kantara Chapter 1 is far ahead of the rest of the field, and Su From So shows that content-driven Kannada films can be a very compelling audience attraction and is one of the most successful Kannada films of all time.

The remaining top five are occupied by some of Sandalwood’s most talked-about releases. Darshan’s Kaatera sold around 970,000 tickets, and Max The Movie around 800,000 tickets. Upendra’s ambitious UI The Movie has sold around 600,000 tickets. These are just a few examples of the many successful Kannada movies, from action dramas to commercial entertainment to experimental films.

The question now is where Toxic will finally fit into this list. The expectations are high as this is Yash’s first major release after the huge success of K.G.F: Chapter 2. Because of the actor’s huge popularity in Karnataka and around India, there is a lot of anticipation for the movie. So far, all the updates related to the movie have been very well received and popular on social media.

Toxic’s appeal in Yash’s pan-Indian aspect is very much in Toxic’s favour. Unlike many regional releases, there is a good chance that the movie will reach audiences in different languages. If word-of-mouth on the film is positive, that kind of wider reach would be helpful in booking and ticket sales ahead.

The other advantage is the curiosity of the project itself. Toxic is marketed as a visually ambitious international production; Geetu Mohandas wants to promote it. The film’s unique title, mysterious promotional strategy and big production budget have made it stand out from the usual commercial releases. The curiosity would attract potential casual viewers as well as Yash’s hardcore fans.

Even Kantara Chapter 1’s record is tough to break. With 14.1 million ticket sales, it has become a benchmark that is now well ahead of all the other Kannada movies on the list. To get to second would take a good movie and a steady audience for a few weeks to become one of the top three movies.

Toxic will be on the list for trade observers if the audience reaction is good. Good opening-day sales, high ticket prices in the markets, and strong overseas interest will drive an impressive ticket-sales total. But much is about the film’s content, critical response, and repeat audience viewing after release.

Toxic is already being compared to the last giant movies on social media. Yash’s supporters are betting on new milestones, and others are taking a more cautious approach to the movie and waiting to see how it plays before it reaches theatres. That kind of debate is a reflection of the huge expectations of the project.

The answer will only come down to release. Toxic certainly has the star power, scale and anticipation required to be one of Sandalwood’s biggest ticket-selling films. It will be tough to push Kantara Chapter 1’s wonderful record, but it’s well known that this is already one of the most eagerly awaited Kannada movies of recent years.

All eyes are on Toxic now as advance bookings take place and fan excitement grows. In the coming weeks, we will see if Yash’s new venture can rewrite Sandalwood’s BookMyShow record books or just write another chapter in the story of Kannada cinema’s success.
