New Delhi: The upcoming epic The Pride of Bharat: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj with Rishab Shetty as the lead actor is in high anticipation with the news that Bhumi Pednekar will play Belawadi Mallamma, one of Karnataka’s most celebrated warrior queens. The woman of courage and inspiration, Mallamma Desai is still, in many aspects, an iconic figure in South Indian history.

Who was Belawadi Mallamma?
Belawadi Mallamma, also known as Mallamma Desai, was the queen of the small principality of Belawadi (Belavadi) in present-day Belagavi district, Karnataka. She was from the Desai family and became queen after she married Ishaprabhu Desai, the ruler of Belawadi.
Although very little is known about her early life, Mallamma is remembered as a fearless administrator and military leader who came forward in a time of crisis.
The Battle of Belawadi
In 1678, during Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s southern military campaign, tensions between the Maratha forces and the kingdom of Belawadi escalated into armed conflict.
With Ishaprabhu Desai killed, the situation changed drastically. Instead of surrendering, Queen Mallamma took command of the kingdom’s military and personally commanded the defense of Belawadi Fort.
She was a strong and brave leader who refused to leave her kingdom for a war, even though the Maratha army moved in with such a huge assault on her army that she commanded a much smaller force but still commanded her troops to fight the Maratha army with great courage.
And though Belawadi did fall after a long siege, Mallamma’s resistance became legendary and gained respect from allies and foes alike.
