Yash Was Hurt by Toxic’s Box Office Failure, Says Friend Jaidev Mohan: “Don’t Take It to Your Heart”
Toxic’s box office performance has proved painful for Yash, despite the actor’s efforts to remain positive after releasing the film. Yash’s close friend Jaidev Mohan has now spoken of his conversations with the actor and that the disappointment about the movie could be heard in Yash’s voice.
Toxic, directed by Geetu Mohandas and starring Yash, was released on August 26 with great expectations. Yash’s popularity was high because of the KGF franchise and the film’s big scale, ambitious production and ensemble cast had generated a lot of fanfare for moviegoers.
But Jaidev Mohan says that the response after release was very hard to digest. Jaidev, who was involved in the Kannada dubbing of the film, said that even if his contribution was very small, he was still finding the criticism hard to handle.
Yash Told Him Not to Dwell on the Criticism
The film director Jaidev recalled that he had spoken to Yash at the time of the release of the film, and made contact with the actor by phone after the film's release, and had spoken to him over the phone.
Yash instructed him not to take the criticism personally and to move forward rather than get distracted by the negative response, Jaidev said.
The message from Yash, as recalled by Jaidev, was essentially that the filmmakers had finished their work and handed the movie over to the audience. When a film gets into theatres, you are free to make your own judgment about it.

But Jaidev said, despite Yash's encouraging words, the actor's disappointment was apparent.

Toxic had a strong opening
Toxic opened very well at the box office due in part to Yash’s huge fan base and the anticipation of returning to theatres.
The film’s worldwide opening on its first day was well above ₹100 crore, as reported in the information. Such a start suggested that Toxic would be another major commercial success for the actor.
But the momentum did not follow at the same rate.
The film got mixed-to-negative reactions from critics and audiences; word of mouth seemed to be the main reason why its collections declined from the second day onwards. The film’s decline after the opening was one of the most important talking points during the theatrical run of the movie.
What went wrong with Toxic?
The reasons for a movie’s box office performance are rarely limited to a single factor. In Toxic’s case, criticism was mostly about its execution and the way it told a story, and the expectations on Yash in that regard were high as well.
The KGF films established a particular image for Yash, and viewers looking forward to his next big project naturally had expectations about scale, action and entertainment.
Toxic attempted to present a different cinematic experience under Geetu Mohandas, creating a project that generated substantial curiosity before release. If audience expectations and the final theatrical experience don’t align, word of mouth can have a major impact on a film’s commercial trajectory.
According to the box office figures cited in the report, Toxic had collected around ₹248 crore in India by its 14th day, and its eventual total is expected to be below ₹260 crore. These numbers should be considered trade estimates and not final numbers verified.
This is why Jaidev's account shows that Yash is encouraging everyone around him to move forward rather than be consumed with how the film will be received.
Box office success and failure are both part of a long career for a major actor. A single film’s performance does not necessarily define an actor’s future, especially for someone with Yash’s established fan base and international recognition.
The conversation also demonstrates the emotional side of filmmaking. Every major release is made of actors, directors, technicians and others working hard for years behind the camera on a project. And criticism is hard to process when the audience response isn’t what they expected.
