Anbe Diana, directed by and starring Pari Elavazhagan, is a good romantic family drama in the high-energy Perambur area in Chennai. A conservative Telugu boy falls in love with an Anglo-Indian girl who is the one who is into him and a girl with a different culture that he has a hard life, and there are complicated relationships between her and another girl, with complex family relationships and prejudices that are rooted in family practices. Not a commercial action or an ending but a love story as a whole and how one should be able to love someone and be the ones to love someone from one side of the world.

The filmβs main strength is its simplicity and emotional honesty. Early reviewers have praised Pari Elavazhagan for the seamless relationship between writer, director and lead actor and Ramya Ranganathan has won a lot of praise for her charming and natural performance. Roja, Chetan and Parithabangal Gopi are the supporting actors who bring in warmth and humour so that the family drama is very much alive from start to finish.
Anbe Diana really captures the aesthetics of Perambur and the neighborhood as the environment rather than just a background. The music and soundtrack of Bharath Shankar adds to the emotional scenes and the romance is still grounded. The film is an optimistic one about love overcoming social and cultural barriers and is suitable for family films.
On the downside, the movie has a familiar romantic formula and some people might find it too predictable. Some early reviewers, too, said the pacing could have been tighter. And while some scenes are much longer than you think they need to be, if you would like more emotional storytelling, the movie will be slower.
So far the reaction from the audience has been mostly positive. Social media users have called it a clean, good family entertainment and highlighted Ramya Ranganathan as one of the most impressive performances in the film. The chemistry of the lead actors and the emotional climax of the film also earned praise and it has the potential to be a good choice for people from the audience looking for wholesome entertainment.
In general, Anbe Diana is a good choice for romantic dramas based on family values and emotional storytelling. Although it doesnβt do anything new in the genre, it works because its actors perform sincerely, the emotions are relatable and itβs a good message. Verdict: 3.5/5 - A nice family entertainment that has more heart than spectacle.
