Nayanthara went into 2026 on a high with Chiranjeevi’s Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, which went down as one of the biggest blockbusters of the year. And the film was well received by the audience and gave the actress a good start to the year.

But her subsequent projects have not kept pace. After Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu, Nayanthara has had a series of setbacks with many of her recent films failing to meet expectations at the box office.
One of the biggest disappointments was Patriot, the eagerly awaited Malayalam multistarrer with Nayanthara, Mammootty and Mohanlal in the lead roles. The film got a lot of buzz before it was released due to the fantastic cast, but it didn’t really get a lot of attention from the audience and critics and failed to make the kind of impact which was expected from the industry.
Nayanthara was also associated with LIK, a co-producer of her husband Vignesh Shivan (director). Notwithstanding the hype surrounding the project, the film didn’t perform well at the box office. Its disappointing box office performance was another setback to Nayanthara’s recent run.
Toxic, the Yash-starrer that we all wanted for the movie, was not much better. The film opened well, which only helped with the huge fan base of the movie’s lead actor, but its awful reviews affected the overall response. It had a good start but then turned out to be a bit less than good in the theatrical performance. Nayanthara’s role was also relatively small, and the audience wanted more from her.
Now the attention is on her latest movie Hi starring Kavin. The film has received mixed early reactions. On the second day, it did see a slight improvement in collections, but its theatrical journey is still uncertain. This film will need to keep going over the next few days to be successful.
Nayanthara has especially been struck by the dramatic contrast between the beginning of 2026 and the months that followed. Mana Shankara Vara Prasad Garu provided her with a huge blockbuster, and since then her time in Patriot, LIK, Toxic and now Hi has produced mixed or disappointing results.
We should always remember that a film’s commercial success is not always due to a single actor, at least in ensemble films, where the final box office numbers are determined by a lot more than just one actor. Nayanthara’s presence on screen remains high, and expectations are high for her future projects.
The actress is famous in South Indian cinema with the support of a variety of languages and many successful movies. There are a few underperforming projects, but her next few will be closely watched.
After a big start to a big opening, fans will now look forward to Nayanthara’s upcoming movies being able to provide Nayanthara with another big comeback and help her get back on her winning streak and the winning track she has been on at different stages of her career.
