In a surprise announcement ahead of the year’s biggest film release date for Vijay’s biggest movie, Bengaluru’s renowned Victory Cinema has decided not to screen Vijay's eagerly awaited film Jana Nayagan. The decision comes after negotiations between the single-screen theatre and the film's production house KVN Productions fell apart over commercial terms.
Victory Cinema issued a statement saying the decision was made after lengthy discussions with the distributor. The theatre manager said that KVN Productions had set commercial conditions that were very different from what is standard in the industry and hence the two parties could not come up with a mutually acceptable deal.
The theatre has tried to reach a consensus but decided not to show the film since there has been a breakdown of negotiations, they said. The management said it was a difficult decision; Vijay's fans and regular moviegoers were expecting the film to be released.
"After extensive discussions, we learned that the distributor's commercial terms were different from the usual ones we would have to work with and therefore we could not achieve a mutual agreement," the theatre said.
The news has disappointed many fans in Bengaluru, particularly those who have come to watch big Tamil movies at Victory Cinema, the city’s most popular single-screen cinema. It’s one of the oldest and has been showing popular South Indian movies for years.
While KVN Productions has not yet issued a detailed public response to the dispute, the incident points to the increasing difficulty in theatrical distribution and revenue-sharing in the film industry. Commercial negotiations between producers, distributors, and exhibitors have become more complex, especially for big budget movies with a big audience.
Jana Nayagan will be released across Karnataka and other parts of India through several chains and other participating theatres. There are probably also a lot of other places where fans can watch the movie when it is released.
The dispute has sparked discussions on social media, with many fans expressing disappointment over Victory Cinema's absence from the film's release while hoping that similar disagreements can be resolved in the future to ensure wider theatrical availability.
As Jana Nayagan’s popularity continues to build, the box office performance and whether the distribution issue will have any significant impact on its release in Bengaluru is now more of the focus.
