Producer Archana Kalpathi has recently told the story of how she avoided meeting Thalapathy Vijay for years because her family really liked him. In an interview, she said she believed in the saying: "Don’t meet your heroes."
But everything changed when the two collaborated on the huge sports drama Bigil (2019). Working with Vijay changed Archana’s perspective so much and showed that he lived up to her expectations and was a man of humility, discipline and passion for films.
Archana made these revelations during an interview with Touring Talkies, where she discussed her relationship with Vijay and having produced one of Tamil cinema’s biggest commercial successes.
Why did Archana Kalpathi avoid meeting Vijay?
Archana revealed that although her father Kalpathi S. Aghoram, CEO of AGS Entertainment, had a cordial relationship with Vijay for years, she deliberately chose not to meet the actor.
She said she had always admired Vijay from afar and she believed that meeting him might alter the image she had formed in her mind.
Archana says people often idealise their favorite celebrities and it is difficult for them to live up to those expectations. So believing this, she stayed away whenever Vijay visited her home or when her father met with the actor to talk about whether he had the chance to work with him on a film.
Interestingly, Archana revealed that her husband had met Vijay more often than she had before Bigil finally brought them together professionally.
Bigil Became Their First Collaboration
The long-anticipated collaboration eventually occurred with Bigil, directed by Atlee and produced by AGS Entertainment.
The 2019 sports action drama starred Vijay as Michael Rayappan and football coach Bigil in dual roles and became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year, and was appreciated by the audience as well.
In this movie, action and emotion, sports, social and social themes were interspersed with women’s football and the movie became a huge commercial success in India and overseas.
But for Archana, the project was memorable not just for its box office performance but because it helped her to get a close view of Vijay's work ethic.
'He Surpassed Every Expectation'
When Archana reflects on it, she admits her fears were completely unfounded.
She referred to Vijay as one of the rare individuals who genuinely lives up to the admiration people have for him.
What she found most remarkable about him, despite being so popular, was how simple he was. She said he had an almost impregnable, approachable and very grounded nature, yet was so focused on his work throughout the entire production.
Vijay’s professionalism was apparent on set every day, Archana said. He was able to set high standards for his entire team: from arriving on time, preparing for filming and staying awake and focused in each and every scene.
Professionalism That Left a Lasting Impression
Archana also highlighted Vijay's commitment to authenticity while shooting Bigil.
Instead of using body doubles for football sequences, the actor learned many of the required football movements himself to make the scenes look more realistic.
She said Vijay would arrive at the shooting site fully prepared, having already studied the day's dialogue sheets in advance. His work ethic and dedication to the project encouraged everyone working on it.
Vijay’s simplicity was another quality that stood out for Archana. He was one of India’s biggest stars, and yet brought his own umbrella and refused to travel with such a large entourage, she said.
A Successful Partnership Continues
Following the huge success of Bigil, AGS Entertainment reunited with Vijay for The Greatest of All Time (GOAT), directed by Venkat Prabhu.
The second collaboration further strengthened the professional relationship between the production house and the actor and cemented the trust and mutual respect built during their first project together.
Vijay has earned a reputation for his disciplined work ethic and dedication—qualities which are frequently acknowledged by directors, producers and co-stars. Archana Kalpathi’s comments add another perspective to the many stories highlighting the actor's professionalism behind the camera.
