Nayanthara may be among Yash’s biggest stars for Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups, but she initially turned it down. She didn’t turn it down because she didn’t love the story or the team. Instead, the film’s large ensemble cast turned her off about getting involved.
Toxic was staged by Geetu Mohandas, which has a strong cast in the film, including Yash, Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth. A dark, action-oriented drama with a strange character.
Nayanthara, playing a gangster named Ganga, eventually changed her mind after listening to Geetu Mohandas’ narration.
Why did Nayanthara initially say no?
Nayanthara told us at the film trailer launch that she was initially reluctant to join Toxic because of its ensemble cast.
When Geetu Mohandas first approached her, the actor reportedly said no. Nayanthara was not particularly interested in becoming part of a film with several prominent female actors.
But Geetu did not give up. The filmmaker continued to describe her vision and finally convinced Nayanthara to hear the whole story.
According to Nayanthara, Geetu asked a few questions before she agreed to meet her and narrate the script. When the actor heard the story, her perspective changed completely.
Geetu Mohandas' Script Impressed Nayanthara
After listening to the narration, Nayanthara was apparently surprised by the filmmaker’s vision. She started to wonder about Geetu and why audiences had not seen this particular aspect of her creative ability before.
The actor is confident Toxic will give people a different view of Geetu Mohandas as a filmmaker.
This strong response to the script eventually convinced Nayanthara to take on the role of Ganga.
The character is said to be closely linked to Yash's character, Raya, and is an integral part of the crime-driven story of the film.
Nayanthara Praises Yash's Dedication
Nayanthara also had lots of praise for Yash during the trailer launch. She called him the hardest-working actor she has ever had.
She talked about the sacrifices Yash made while working on the film, spending less time with his family and children because of his commitment to the project.
Nayanthara also praised Yash’s involvement, well beyond his own. “The actor is concerned about the work being done by everyone around him and constantly urges the cast and crew to do their best.”
She also highlighted the bond between Yash and director Geetu Mohandas, saying that he is a very good filmmaker and is totally committed to her vision.
Toxic Creates Controversy
Toxic has also been criticized for its promotional material. Some social media users criticized the film for objectifying women.
Geetu Mohandas responded to the online debate in a cryptic social media post that addressed female pleasure, consent and women navigating systems.
In the film’s bold visual presentation, Ram Gopal Varma has also complimented Geetu’s style and called her an icon of women's empowerment.
What is Toxic about?
Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-Ups is described as a crime drama set against the backdrop of 1980s Goa. It’s all about a powerful drug cartel that is behind the state’s glamorous and picturesque image, the story is said.
Yash plays Raya while Nayanthara plays Ganga. The film also stars Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth.
Toxic has been made in Kannada and English and will reach Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam audiences via dubbed versions led by Venkat K. Narayana and Yash under KVN Productions and Monster Mind Creations.
Now, with Nayanthara’s initial rejection now playing a part in the film’s story, her final decision to join Toxic is even more intriguing. The actor’s faith in Geetu Mohandas’ vision and her support for Yash have only increased expectations for the film.
