Tamil superstar Suriya has shared a list of the five movies that had the biggest impact on him, giving the masses a taste of which movies have been driving him on the path of being an actor. Suriya spoke to Anupama Chopra on the special anniversary conversation about the films he loves the most and why each one is special to him.
Sethu was the one on his list starring Chiyaan Vikram and Suriya still feels the film is one of his all-time favorites because Vikram’s transformation and emotional impact are all that he knows. He appreciated the actor’s dedication and the movie has been a powerful example for aspiring actors.
The second film on Suriya’s list was S.S. Rajamouli’s Eega, which he thought was a great example of fresh storytelling and cinematic imagination. Rajamouli’s Eega is a great example of the kind of new storytelling and the kind of cinema that he loved so much which has to be seen. Rajamouli was able to transform an unusual idea into an enjoyable, entertaining blockbuster which he considers one of the best examples of creative cinema in Indian film history.
Suriya also included Lagaan, directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, as one of his favorite movies. He was proud of the film’s epicness, emotional impact, and the performance of its actors that it managed to take sports, history, and human emotions and make it a universal cinema experience.
The fourth film was especially close to Suriya’s heart—his own blockbuster Kaakha Kaakha, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon. Suriya had said that the film is one of the most important moments in his career. He fondly remembered sharing screen space with Jyotika and how the movie changed his career and personal life.
Dhurandhar was next among Suriya's favorite films for the script to be interesting, the writing to be sharp, and the cinematography to make it a movie. He thought that the film kept the audience engaged through a compelling story and memorable performances.
From his experience and his choices, Suriya said every film on the list taught him something about cinema—whether it was acting, storytelling, filmmaking, or emotional expression. And yet, these movies are still an inspiration to him and have been foundational to him in the learning of the art.
