Vishwanath and Sons opened in theatres today, August 14, 2026, and the audience has been mostly positive so far. Directed by Venky Atluri, Suriya, Mamitha Baiju, Radhikaa Sarathkumar, Raveena Tandon and Nassar are all in key roles. The performances, emotional storytelling and first-half comedy have been particularly praised by early viewers.

The story
Suriya plays Sanjay Vishwanath, an international pistol shooter, whose life turns topsy-turvy when his young son is in a serious medical emergency. His search for a suitable donor brings him into contact with Maddy, played by Mamitha Baiju.
What starts as an emotionally complicated relationship eventually becomes a story of love, family, parenthood, sacrifice and second chances. The trailer had already indicated that the film would combine romance with family drama and the theatrical response suggests that the emotional parts form the heart of the movie.
Suriya is the biggest strength
Suriya gets to move away from the action-heavy roles that people have seen him in recently. His portrayal of Sanjay is more restrained and emotional, so the actor can focus on the character over the mass moments.
Early reactions have focused on Suriya as one of the best in the film. His ability to go from being funny to being emotional and just feel alive in the movie helps keep it together.
Karthi, who watched the movie, also praised Suriya's performance, as he was seen to be in a class of his own.
Mamitha Baiju makes an impact
Mamitha Baiju is another major highlight. Her character gives the story a lot of energy, warmth and humour at the beginning and early audience reactions really appreciated her performance.
The movie’s chemistry between Suriya and Mamitha is a talking point, despite the age gap in their relationship. It was the director who told us so previously that the film is about changing attitudes toward age and relationships.
First Half vs Second Half
The first half seems to be the strongest; comedy, character development and engaging moments are praised by early viewers. Social media comments have always mentioned the first half and Mamitha's performance.
The second half is more emotional and family-oriented. People have felt the film gets a bit long in places, but the emotional payoff and comedy keep it engaging.
It was also noted that the first half of Reddit audience reactions were also very strong, while the second half is a bit longer but still entertaining.
Direction and Emotions
Venky Atluri’s greatest strength is his ability to balance family sentiment with commercial entertainment. Instead of making a movie about romance, he uses relationships between parents, children and partners to drive the emotional core.
The movie also has strong supporting performances from Radhikaa Sarathkumar. Karthi specifically praised the supporting cast alongside Suriya and Mamitha.
Verdict
Vishwanath and Sons seems to be a warm, emotional and entertaining family drama rather than a conventional Suriya mass-action vehicle.
The film works best when it focuses on the characters, family relationships and humour. Suriya has a restrained performance, while Mamitha Baiju is fresh and energetic. The first half is really enjoyable but the second half can feel a bit stretched for some people.
Rating: ⭐⭐⭐½/5
Verdict: A wholesome family entertainer that comes from Suriya, Mamitha Baiju, emotional storytelling and lots of humour.
