The controversy began after the private television channel paid tribute to the late playback star to the late playback artist. The programme was intended as a tribute to S. Janaki for all her wonderful contributions to Indian music, but some people on social media insulted and mischaracterized Anuradha Bhat.

Responding to the criticism, Anuradha Bhat took to social media to say her side of the story. She firmly stated that neither she nor the musicians who performed with her received any payment for participating in the programme.

"We didn’t accept even a penny for offering our musical tribute to Janaki Amma," said the singer, rejecting charges that the event was commercially motivated.

She added that the performance was done out of respect and gratitude for one of India’s greatest playback singers, and to have inspired generations of musicians.

Tribute Meant to Honour a Legend

Anuradha Bhat said the programme was conceived as a heartfelt musical tribute to S. Janaki’s incomparable legacy, not a commercial one. She was disappointed that a tribute to a legendary artist had been turned into the target of negative online comments.

"We appeal to the people not to spread misinformation and make personal attacks without knowledge of facts," she said.

Condemns Online Abuse

Anuradha Bhat criticized the abusive language and defamatory comments directed at her on social media and said that constructive criticism is welcome but personal insults and false accusations are unacceptable.

She said social media users should verify information before sharing or commenting, and there must be respect as well when cultural and musical tributes are involved.

Fans Extend Their Support

After she told us, many fans, fellow musicians and well-wishers rallied around Anuradha Bhat on social media. Many said she made great contributions to Kannada music, and they appreciated her for being a part of a tribute to S. Janaki, and not getting paid.

Celebrating S. Janaki's Legacy

S. Janaki is one of India’s most celebrated playback singers, having sung over a decades-long career and thousands of songs in various Indian languages. She is still admired by artists and audiences for her huge impact on Indian music.
