Operation Safed Sagar has become one of the most talked about Indian web series for portraying the Indian Air Force’s role in the Kargil War. And it seems that for all the military action, emotional storytelling and authenticity in the series, there is another very personal part at the end of every episode. The series pays tribute to late comedian Raju Srivastava so much more than an ordinary dedication.

The tribute is especially important because Raju Srivastava was the paternal uncle of the series’ co-creator Kushal Srivastava. Kushal was an officer in the Indian Air Force when he entered the film industry. Raju was instrumental in a decision of Kushal to leave for cinema in the beginning of his career and become a filmmaker.

Kushal had expressed his desire to do something that would eventually become known around the world with his uncle. Raju, famous for his trademark humour, was initially reluctant to tell him to carry out hand pumps in Kushal’s name. But once he realized that his nephew was really interested in filmmaking, he supported it and was in favour of him leaving the Indian Air Force.

Kushal resigned from IAF in the year 2016 and left for Mumbai to pursue his creative aspirations. At this time he stayed with Raju Srivastava and he was also a sounding board for Kushal for scripts and a chance in the film industry. Kushal made his first directorial debut with Vodka Diaries in 2018 and started work behind the camera.

Raju and Operation Safed Sagar’s connection was even stronger as the project developed. Kushal and Raju’s daughter Antara Srivastava (the show’s Associate Director) worked together on the project. Some of the initial research and development reportedly took place at Raju’s office. His involvement was not only emotional and encouraging, he also assisted the team in getting permissions from various government ministries.

Operation Safed Sagar was not originally set up as a series. The project was originally planned as a feature film before turning into a bigger episodic project. Netflix supported the project in 2022. Raju Srivastava was aware of the project before his death in September 2022, and the series was particularly emotional for his family.

Antara’s show is especially meaningful to her. Operation Safed Sagar was the last project her father knew about before his passing. In this sense, the tribute at the end of every episode is not just a tribute to one of India’s best-known comedians, but also to him for the work he was doing for them in which he was deeply connected.

The series premiered on Netflix on August 7, 2026 and describes the Golden Arrows Squadron and the dangerous missions of Indian Air Force personnel in the Kargil War. Siddharth, Jimmy Shergill and Abhay Verma play the lead roles and Dia Mirza, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin and other actors are also present.

One of the strengths of Operation Safed Sagar has been its authenticity. They collaborated with IAF veterans and filmed at operational Air Force locations, the production said. The production also tried to replicate the hard working conditions faced by pilots and personnel during the conflict in order to give viewers a better understanding of the high-altitude combat conditions.

Abhay Verma has also talked about the special experience that it was to sit in a MiG-21 at the time of making the series. Since the fighter jet was at the end of its service, the experience was very special to the crew and the cast.

Operation Safed Sagar is not only about aircraft, combat missions and military strategy. It also attempts to explore the personal lives of the officers and the families who remained behind while their loved ones served in extremely dangerous conditions. This combination of action and emotional storytelling is the series' way to connect with audiences beyond its war drama setting.

In that way, the tribute to Raju Srivastava adds an extra emotional dimension to the series. His support for Kushal’s decision to go from IAF to filmmaking, his involvement in the early stages of the project and his knowledge of Operation Safed Sagar before he died, as well as his knowledge of the project were important in the end credit dedication.

For viewers, the tribute may appear as a brief moment after an episode ends. But for Kushal and Antara Srivastava it is a lasting bond with a family member who helped them discover their creative spark and encouraged them during early days in developing the project. In that way the dedication allows Raju Srivastava’s memory to stay in the fold and we can keep it all together in a story that combines the Indian Air Force, filmmaking and family.

Operation Safed Sagar therefore carries two kinds of remembrance: one for the air warriors who fought in the Kargil War and contributed to the series and another for Raju Srivastava, whose own attachment to the creators of the series helped shape the journey behind the screen.
