SS Thaman is one of the most sought-after technicians in the vibrant Telugu cinema and is most famous for creating mass entertainment experiences with some of the biggest stars in the industry. His ability to combine music with the visual spectacle of cinema has earned him a lot of good work from filmmakers and audiences alike, with a lot of high-profile projects coming in.
But Thaman is currently riding this wave of success, and now he has two upcoming movies that will test his skill and adaptability on a special level. The great composer is also in the soundtracks for Nandamuri Balakrishna’s anticipated NBK111, and the eagerly awaited Kaaka with Megastar Chiranjeevi. Both are creating a lot of buzz in the film industry, and both have their release dates in the Christmas and Sankranthi seasons (e.g., December and Sankranthi respectively).
This tight scheduling presents a formidable professional challenge for Thaman as he juggles two star-studded movies that are coming out in close succession. The two releases are so close that they’re only 20 days apart. As a composer conducting soundscapes of two major productions with several celebrated figures, this can be a daunting job. Background scoring is key in mass entertainment cinema, as it greatly enhances action scenes, elevates hero introduction moments, tugs at the heartstrings during emotional moments, and amplifies the climactic scenes that audiences love to watch.
Furthermore, both films have their own huge fan bases that Thaman will have to satisfy. Nandamuri Balakrishna has very loyal fans, and Thaman has already received a lot of love from Nandamuri fans for having contributed to Balakrishna's films in previous works with his songs so far. His energetic background score and crowd-pleasing score have always been the most popular among the Balakrishna films, and have earned him the affectionate name “Nandamuri Thaman” from fans. Therefore, with NBK111, there are high expectations and pressure for the composer to do another great score.
Kaaka is more of an expectation-based film. One of Telugu cinema's most celebrated actors, Chiranjeevi's movies are all about high-octane action and grand storytelling. The teaser for Kaaka promises a fun and action-packed atmosphere and Thaman’s music will be at the heart of the film’s ambitious story, and the strongest moments will have to be the ones in which the film will be highlighted. The composer is keen on bringing his best to this project in the hope that the action-oriented promise of the film in the promotional material will be met and his background score could be a key element of the movie.
In the past, Thaman has faced similar pressures in his career before. Last year, he was in a somewhat similar position when working on Pawan Kalyan’s OG and Balakrishna’s Akhanda 2. At that time, Balakrishna gave Thaman even more time to work on Akhanda 2, and OG went forward without any schedule conflicts. But the situation now is quite different because the potential gap of 20 days between NBK111 and Kaaka leaves significantly less room for extended post-production work, and it’s much more pressing.
The expectations for NBK111 are even higher as Thaman is such good friends with Balakrishna’s mass persona. His powerful background scores and catchy musical moments have made him a highly sought-after composer for the actor’s projects, and this history suggests that the expectations for NBK111 will be nothing short of monumental. The film’s grand scale, Balakrishna’s commanding screen presence, and director Gopichand Malineni’s flair for mass-oriented filmmaking all imply Thaman would need to write an excellent score to meet but exceed the huge expectations.
Kaaka, however, is a different kind of challenge. Thaman has to come up with a unique musical identity that complements Chiranjeevi’s larger-than-life on-screen persona and fits Bobby’s vision of an action-driven narrative. The composer has a sense of responsibility for this and is committed to working his hardest for this project, as he knows if the film does live up to the action-packed promise it has advertised in its promotion, then the background score could become one of its major theatrical assets.
Thaman needs to do all he can to ensure that both films are infused with distinctive musical identities. He has to be mindful of the pressure of a short timeline hurting both projects’ quality.
With Balakrishna and Chiranjeevi having huge fan bases, Thaman’s work will be heavily scrutinized. The public’s ears are tuned to music and background scores, and if there is a difference in quality between the two movies, then they will quickly become a topic of discussion on social media.
