Nimisha Sajayan Opens Up About 14-Kg Transformation: ‘Sleep Loss, Mood Swings and Exhaustion Took a Toll’
Nimisha Sajayan has opened up about the grueling physical and emotional transformation of her new film, "Babita Singh Reporting". Her body had to be transformed for the role, gaining nearly 14 kg before taking on an equally grueling weight-loss process. Sajayan shared photographs of her transformation and spoke through the hardest days of her journey- sleeping poorly, mood swings, fatigue, frustration and emotional vulnerability.
Nimisha Sajayan’s weight increased for the role from about 58 kg to 72 kg. After that part of the transformation was completed, she started losing weight. But it wasn’t all about exercise, diet, or seeing the number on the scale. The first days of her weight loss were particularly tough for her physically as well as mentally, she said.
Sajayan said the first 10 days were particularly difficult for her. She experienced sleep deprivation, mood swings and was tired from the transformations. There were also times when the process seemed overwhelming. She said at times she felt like she could not go on and was often emotional during her training sessions.
Sajayan went on with the assistance of her trainer, Ali Shifas. As an adult now, it taught her more than physical transformation and she feels like she learned how to be patient and consistent with the process and have a strong support system. Her trainer was instrumental in keeping her focused without making her feel guilty about it, she said.
Nimisha Sajayan’s story also brings to light a fundamental aspect of weight loss that gets overlooked. Fitness transformations are often depicted in before-and-after photographs, workout videos and changes in body weight. But major changes in diet, exercise routines and body composition can also affect a person’s energy, emotional state and overall sense of wellbeing.
If people eat very little and follow very restrictive diets, they get tired, irritable and are not able to keep up with their energy levels. A demanding workout routine is just as difficult on the body as any other because the body hasn’t been fed enough nor rested. The pressure to look good or to be the ideal weight is emotional stress and not easy to manage.
Sleep is one of the most important elements of a fitness or weight loss journey. Lack of sleep makes one tired, slows concentration and contributes to mood swings. In a situation like this, when someone has already been doing hard exercise and diet change and has not settled in the long run, poor sleep is just as important.
The key to weight management is to have good sleep, exercise and healthy food. Sleep deprivation in a bid to gain weight will make it more difficult in the end. Sustainable habits do more good than extreme ones that are just not long term and can’t be maintained.
Sajayan's transformation is also important in that it was for a professional film. Actors can work in specialised training and nutrition programs for a project. Such transformations may not be a good idea for those who are working on weight loss for their health and fitness.
For most people, extreme calorie restriction, crash diets and excessive exercise are just not sustainable. Lifestyle changes that are carried out gradually in a healthy way with enough nutrition, sufficient activity and good sleep and recovery are usually easier to maintain. People who suffer from chronic fatigue, mood swings, dizziness, sleep disturbances or other issues when trying to lose weight should look to a doctor or a nutritionist.
Sajayan’s frank tale also underscores the need for help in life transitions. Whether it’s from a good trainer, a family member, a friend or a healthcare professional who is supportive or accountable, encouragement and accountability can make difficult goals seem achievable.
Nimisha Sajayan’s 14-kg transformation is more about a woman who is not only changing her body for the screen, but a girl who is also in a healthy state of mind. Her story shows us that fitness can involve emotional highs and lows and that patience, recovery and mental health are as important as workouts and numbers on a scale. The best approach is one that works towards a goal and that is also about developing habits that are good for long-term physical and emotional health.
