The Tamil movie Amaran was one of the major winners of the 72nd National Film Awards and has been awarded three awards for its wonderful portrayal of the life and loss of Indian Army Major Mukund Varadarajan.
Rajkumar Periasamy won the Best Director award, and music composer GV Prakash was awarded Best Music Direction for the film. Editor R Kalaivannan was also awarded Best Editing.
The recognition is a big deal for Periasamy, who said receiving the National Award was a lifelong dream ever since he decided to become a filmmaker.
“I’ve always dreamed of winning the National Award ever since I dreamt of becoming a film director. And it’s come true now! God has been truly kind,” Periasamy wrote in a post on X.
The director said his main aim in making “Amaran” was to create empathy for the people whose stories were being presented, specifically Indian Army personnel and their families.
He dedicated the honour to the family of Major Mukund Varadarajan, whose life and sacrifice are the emotional core of the film.
Periasamy said that receiving the “Golden Lotus” award had inspired him to go on and explore his creative process and reassured him of the path he had chosen as a filmmaker.
The director congratulated his collaborators, GV Prakash and R Kalaivannan, and expressed gratitude to the film’s producers, cast, and all crew.
Sai Pallavi Celebrates Periasamy’s Victory
Sai Pallavi, who played the female lead in the film, was emotional at the National Award recognition.
Periasamy’s post was shared on her part, and the actor wrote that her heart was full and praised the director for handling the tough story with “grit and respect”.
She congratulated Periasamy, GV Prakash, and R Kalaivannan for their achievements.

The Story Behind Amaran
Amaran, starring Sivakarthikeyan and Sai Pallavi, is based on Mukund Varadarajan's life, who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra for his bravery during a counterterrorism operation.
The film was based on the book India’s Most Fearless: True Stories of Modern Military Heroes, written by Shiv Aroor and Rahul Singh.
Amaran didn’t just focus on battlefield action but also the personal life of Major Mukund and his family, which made this an emotional story about the sacrifices soldiers and their loved ones made.
